Flashing Climate Unit But Code Doesn't Match...new Owner

Hello,

 

Bought a 2003 2.3 Manual Ghia Galaxy from a dealer last week, 92k miles, full history, new tyres, discs and pads all round and the car is cosmetically near perfect in and out; very pleased with it so far but it came with a few known issues that the dealer has agreed to fix for me. The main problems were the air con not appearing to blow cold and cruise control not functioning.

 

On inspecting the car I noticed the climate unit was flashing, did a quick google and found this is due to a fault code stored in the unit and like due to a loss of pressure in the system. I was sure to get the dealer to put in writing that it would be fixed, same with the cruise.

 

On collection I checked and it did seem to be blowing pretty cold, trouble it it's less than 7deg C out at the moment so it's hard to tell. There was a noticeable air con smell though and you can hear the compressor kicking in/out when pressing econ/auto.

 

Anyway I read the codes using VCDS-Lite and the following error message was/is stored in the climatronic unit:-

Cleared the code and the unit no longer flashes until you turn the car off/on run it for a bit and then the flash returns.

 

So, the question is, rather than the air con having lost it's coolant is it sensible to say there is indeed a faulty speedo sensor that feeds data to the climate unit (I've read something about it could be using it to take into account wind chill factor?). If it was a low pressure fault would this come up as a more explicit error message saying as such? For info the clocks are all working perfectly.

 

It's going back to the dealer later in the week for the cruise sorting so I'll not worry about that just yet and assume he can sort it.

 

Other than the cd changer and the analogue clock not working (both sourced cheap off ebay) I'm really happy with the car. Absolutely brilliant for what it's designed to do i.e. tranport 3+ kids and 2 adults in supreme comfort.

Under possible symptoms is "Cruise Control Doesn't Work" - mine doesn't work!

 

The dealer said his electrician has ordered in a replacement sensor after having a look at it last week. I wonder if that will stop the flashing.

 

Anyway, We shall see....best bet is to hand it back and let someone else pull their hair out I think. I'll update with what happens anyway.

welcome to the forum,yes i agree get the dealer to sort your problems out.

 

iirc under the sale of goods act,you have 28 days to notify the supplying dealership of any problems with the car,

and they have to sort them out,and this is nothing to do with any warranty you may have with the car.

Minor update.

 

Car is back at the supplying dealer who's had it for 3.5 days now.

 

Spoke yesterday and he said his autoelectrician was having a bit of a nightmare as the cruise control is a vacuum system rather than pure elctronic....Yes, I knew that from 10minutes googling, muppet.

 

I already found the usual near side wing pipe to the vac pump has disintegrated, replacing that with a bit of random rubber pipe didn't fix it so the fault must lie in the pipework elswhere, the pump, ECU or pedal switches..or all of the above.

 

Lets see if he can get it working anyway.

 

At least he's leant me a car in the mean time.

 

Other things to fix are a sticky starter motor and the headlight level motors have seized....once they are sorted I'll have a 100% working car. I like everything to work, even if you don't need it to!!

This may be something to do with the climate control sensor fan (housed in the unit behind the slatted bit).

 

On my Mk1 I established the the fan had stuck (dust and fluff) and it threw a flashing fault even thought the cooling worked. VAGCOM (earlier version to VCDS lite) reported it as 65535 Memory fault IIRC which was actually incorrect as 65535 should be fault (indeterminate) - in other words CC reported it was faulty, but no description was available.

 

"Speedometer" might again be refering to the sensor fan, which is monitored for rotation and the G22 message is just some sloppy coding from Rosstech.

 

Anyway, to cut this long winded reply to the quick, I used a small brush and a vaccum cleaner to suck the dust out and free the fan. If you place your ear next to the sensor air inlet and turn the ignition on (not the engine) you should hear a gentle whir from the fan.

Thanks to seatkid I saved a whole heap of cash by not buying a new aux heater. I was having a spot of bother with the aux heater not always firing up and VCDS Lite showed a weird memory error code. I cleaned out the afore mention fan using an air compressor, vacuum cleaner and a brush and voila. Don't spray WD-40 in there. It is a tiny fan mounted on a printed circuit board and you may do more damage plus give something for future dust to stick to.

Found a German site where they stripped the cc control unit down with photos and mentioned the 65535 fault and stuck fan. I've not been able to find it again though.

Right....so I got the car back off the inept dealer on Friday - they had it nearly 2 weeks and still not fixed the cruise control. It took them this long to diagnose a faulty speed control vac pump and I'm waiting on them sourcing a replacement part. this involved me doing all the chasing up and bascially having to become a pest to get them to give me my bloody car back. Not happy. I suspect I may wait forever for this as they have generally been utterly contemptable in their part of this transaction. Anyway, I digress.

 

So, my CC unit is still flashing - I poked a brush into the left hand grill on the front, gave it a wiggle. I then stuck my vacuum cleaner nozzle over it and you can hear the little fan whizzing around in there. you can also hear it spinning when ignition is on so that's working OK. Cleared the code - no flashing. Drove the car for a bit and the flashing came back.

 

I'm stil not 100% sure the climate is actually working. Given it's pretty cold out at the moment it's hard to determine. I can nick an infra red thermometer from work actually - does anyone know at what temp it should be blowing given a known ambient?

 

I'm sure I found a PDF of a graph for this somewhere but I can't remember where.
