Hi

Thinking of buying a galaxy 2.3 ghia 52 plate with 19000 miles on the clock. Have spoken to the one previous owner and all seems fine with the car

HOWEVER the first service wasn't done on time - it was done at 16,500 miles not the recommended 12,500 (I believe).

The reason for this all seems fine (just didn't get round to it etc.... and they had a new car on order so probably were hoping not to have to bother at all).

Does anyone know does this invalidate the warranty? I think the answer is yes. :( But I hope not as I really like the car but won't buy it without a warranty.

Thanks

Unfortunately it was serviced in Surrey and we live in Wales. Even if the Surrey garage says it's ok does that mean all other garages will do the same?

Are you buying privately or main dealer. I believe the documentation supplied with the car will stipulate quite clearly that the service must be done within 1 month or 1000 miles of the stipulated interval or mileage (10000miles or 12 months for the Alhambra - I would think the Galaxy would be the same). If the dealer you are buying from is willing to put in writing that the warranty is valid, I then confirm this with Ford and take it from there. If the warranty is not valid (as I suspect) then it's your decision. In reality 6500 miles is hardly going to make any diffrence, but as you will find from reading on here, threse wonderful vehicles are not always that reliable and warranty claims are sometimes required. You also have the option of taking out your own warranty - for example the Civil Service Motoring Association (which you can join if you, your spouse, your parents etc etc are or have ever worked in the civil service or BT - Advert over!) will sell you a warranty. Obviously at the end of the day, you've got to decide on price.

Unless the price is very good. Remember there are more Galaxies out there. It took 4 months to find the one I wanted and we had to search the internet for it. That kind of money you have to get it right.

Even if the dealer is obliging, I certainly know that Seat UK wouldn't entertain it and the manufacturer has to OK any warranty work. AFAIK, by law, items that are clearly not reliant on the (10,000/1yr) service interval. e.g. paintwork, body corrosion, and lots of other things must still be covered under warranty. But any problems with the engine they will wash their hands of.

19000 miles before a 1st service is totally stupid (neglect) considering the warranty implications though depending on the use and care it may be perfectly OK. The price has to reflect the fact that the warranty is blown... :(

If they decided to ignore (they must have known!!) the servicing, I would question if they ever checked the oil etc.
