Guest collinf Posted July 4, 2004 Report Posted July 4, 2004 I have read the various threads on here about the glow plug flashing and the link to the engine mnget system fault. Mine has started to flash after one period of very heavy braking, Skidded for about 30 yards on M25 nearly lost it!!.Anyway my brake lights will not work, bulbs are ok, BUT the high level light still works?? Could I have damaged the brake switich if so how do I go about changeing it?where is it?etc Any thoughts would be apprecitaed Quote
Topbloke Posted July 4, 2004 Report Posted July 4, 2004 there are two switches on the brake pedal one for the brake lights one for the ecu if the high level brake light works the one would assume that the switch must be okay which would suggest that the bulbs are u/s there are various threads on the forum with this problem and it is not unknown for the switches to stick the switches are very easy to change and are about 10 12 quid each some people have had success spraying with wd 40 etc Quote
Guest collinf Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 thanks for the reply, have checked the bulbs and both are OK. Cannot understand why the top one comes on still.Have got a new switch, Quote
Topbloke Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 if the high level one comes on it must be wired through the other switch perhaps some kind sole could look at the wirring diagrams and see if that is correct the switches are usually a twist fit iirc although i am a little worried when you said that you removed the dash please explain :( Quote
Tigger Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 My Webpage had problem with gloe plug light and brake light changed brake peddle switch! Quote
Guest collinf Posted July 6, 2004 Report Posted July 6, 2004 Topbloke, When I said the dash I meant the lower facia!!, so I could get at the switch. My model has only one switch, a 4 pin type.Have got good acces to it and can twist it clockwise to loosen it, but the dam thing will not come out of the mounting plate. I can see the elongated hole where it is supposed to pull throuh, but after 2 hours in the footwell I gave up.Waiting for a new switch today to be delivered then will have another go. Any tricks to get it out would be welcome ta Quote
Nige F Posted July 6, 2004 Report Posted July 6, 2004 The plunger that comes out of the main body of the switch needsa firm push downwards and it will slide into the switch body. When fitting the new switch, push it all the way down, locate it and then pull it out to touch the brake pedal. Quote
Guest nimrod Posted July 6, 2004 Report Posted July 6, 2004 Nige if your on about setting the switch? the brake pedal should be depressed as far as possible and held in that position and then the plunger on the switch should be pulled out as far as it goes, release the pedal and when it pushes the plunger back to its resting position, thats the switch set! Guest collinf Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004  Finally got this sorted. When I got hold of a new switch, found the locating arms were different at each end, one square and the other one pointed. When I came to fit it noted the pointed hole and square hole in the mounting plate are the wrong way around. The steering column interferes with the twisting of the whole switch so it can only go in ne way.The mounting bracket has space for 2 switches, I guess they never changed it when they up rated to one switch.Anyway after some attention with a stanley knife to ADJUST the pointed arm, it all went in ok. But i still caught my hand on the metal casing holding the fuse plate in , Blood everywhere!!! It also blew one bulb whilst testing it, and blew the second after first fitting it. Anyway one switch and two bulbs and a scratched hand later I am legal again, Thanks all for the tips Quote
grifjl Posted July 23, 2004 Report Posted July 23, 2004 We have just had the same problem. Funny - the car was in the dealers 7 days ago to have new rear brake pads. The switch was covered in new (clean) grease. Glow plug flashing and no brakes. Played with the switch and hey presto, loosened up and everything fine. The only thing you guys have not mentioned is whether your 'Engine Workshop' sign came on. We had never seen this before and it only came on at the same time we diagnosed the problem. It is not coming on anymore, do you think the problem being diagnosed was the one solved? Or is there another latent problem? Did you see the sign come up? Please let me know, I am having a nightmare with what was a previously reliable Sharan (02 TDI). Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted July 23, 2004 Report Posted July 23, 2004 Ah, so you took your car to the dealers. No wonder it doesn't work as well as it did before! Quote
