At the start of this month I once again put out a request for the part I needed via Breakeryard.com. I had 5 or 6 responses from various different auto breakers who were all offering me the part I needed for varying prices. Upon further investigation, most of them turned out to be offering the 115PS or 130PS driveshaft which they believed would be compatible. One dealer, however, assured me that the part he had was correct as he had 2 driveshafts from 1.9Tdi 6 speed manual 2003 Galaxies which he'd broken up and, side by side, one of them was an inch longer than the other. I ordered it up immediately for

Hello,

Correct shaft from Ford Parts UK (Foray Motor Group in Salisbury) was delivered today and I have pictures, making a comparison between the right one and the wrong one. For some reason I cannot upload the picture, it's a jpeg and is only about 300kb in size. It says there has been an error. Can anybody help me please? If this thread helps even one person avoid the problems I've been having, I feel it's worth posting.

Thanks,

does this same sort of problem affect any of the earlier models (2.0 5 speed petrol 98 specifically?) i ask as i have a horrible noise when pulling away in first or using reverse intermittently which i need to investigate. Have had a look but every one on here seems to be having the problem with diesel varients?

Also the attachments as far as i can tell won't open. Posting them to photobucket and linking should work though?

I don't know personally but hopefully somebody else here will be able to answer that for you. If the driveshaft goes on you completely you'll be going nowhere except for on the back of a flatbed so I'd get it looked at before that happens if I were you (just speaking from recent experience).

Thanks

Exactly my reason for asking. Hoping to get a look under it this weekend.

Whilst under the car, if you notice red dust/staining on the area around where the driveshaft goes into the transmission, that's another sign that the splines are being eaten away. Let us know how you get on.

Doesn't look like its the driveshaft so will have to investigate the selector mech referred to elsewhere i guess. marked the shaft and it doesn't appear to have moved. Theres a little bit of rusty deposits round part of it but nothing that looks unusual.

Just to resurect this old(ish) thread, my driveshaft went on mt 2006 1.9 90Bhp ANU Sharan.

The part number on the gearbox end is 02N409345A and the intermediate driveshaft is : 02n409356j

I've found the first part on Ebay germany but am finding the shaft very hard to find.

I'll post again if I have any success

mines an x reg mk2---90 hp anu engined;

I have the dreaded clang on overrun/acceleration, checked today and the inner shaft is worn where it goes into the gearbox stub.

mine also has a cage surrounding the shaft, after reading pos on here i can see its going to be fun getting a new one ???

motomax in Poland  do not make a replacement but much nearer home ,j&r driveshafts in Birmingham do !!!

I spoke to a lad there this afternoon called dave; he took my reg number and engine code and he says he does do a replacement ---so when I get back from my hols/get paid I will be getting one off him and will report back on here when i've fitted it.

beware of the j&r driveshafts - I've had a pair on a Mondeo that one of has failed in under 20k and the other isn't much better. It also turned out the vibration i had put down to warped brake discs was actually the o/s driveshaft from them.

Theres less to go wrong with the intermediate shaft so probably worth a shot i guess. My issue in this thread was the beginning of the clutch failing rather than driveshaft related (think it was dragging hence didn't go into gear fully), Resolved with clutch and csc replacement.

had it on the lift again this afternoon; theres about 3mm of free play in the 2 shafts as you twist the, plus a loud squeak and the dreaded rusty marks around shaft/gearbox flange.  Its obvious its the stub/intermediate that's needed---but I am not paying stupid ford prices !!   I will speak to j&r  on Monday as they say that although its not listed on the website , they do a shaft for the ANU motors.

I cant see why the anu cars have a large alloy " cradle" around the driveshaft to act as support bearing holder ?  all the other cars have a flat metal plate with the support bearing attached to it.....

now I wonder if I leave off the cradle and use the other type, will it be too short or too long ???

hoping j&r have an answer ???

Here's a link to a picture I put together some time ago, showing the difference between the shaft most Galaxy owners will need and the shaft you'll need if you've got the 90PS engine https://flic.kr/p/gKigU8.

All the breakers were telling me that I needed the shorter of the 2 shafts (see picture), several assured me they had the right bit then sold me the shorter of the 2 shafts (115/130bhp) which was wrong.

So maybe be a little bit cautious of those who say they've got the bit you need because there's a chance they don't know and understand that there's any difference between the various bits. In the end, I couldn't get the part from anywhere else other than Ford for bonkers money, and within 6 months the car was scrapped anyway.

If you use the shaft from a 115/130 engine, it'll be too short by about an inch. From the splined end of the shaft upto and including the bearing and mounting bracket the 2 shafts are identical as far as I can tell, put side by side. The only part that seems different is the bit beyond the bearing that bolts onto the outer drive shaft (in my picture it's the bit to the left of the mounting bracket).

One idea I had (but never got to try) was to have my engineer brother produce for me a circular metal spacer the correct thickness to make up the difference in length between the correct and incorrect driveshafts, filling the gap between the intermediate and outer shafts. Basically a steel doughnut with 6 holes drilled through it, and 6 longer than standard bolts to go through the extra material. This would have saved me about £300.

barnstormer, can you email me that photo please ?  I want to send that to j&r in the morning ?

I have just sent a message and will send my email to you.

Hi daddyfixit,

I've just emailed you the picture, hopefully it'll prove helpful even if it only prevents you buying the wrong bit. Let us know.

Cheers

update to this long-running thread

I sent two pics from  barnstormer to Lee at j&r drive shafts in brum, 2 days later part number ds523 arrived.

on the Saturday morning at 07.30 I stripped car down in my mates garage to find it was indeed the wrong one !!

re-built car after ringing J&R who open 7 days a week according to flyer that came with the shaft..........they are shut !!

I rang lee back on the Monday, turns out they had mis-packed shaft......he said correct one would be there next day and courier would take the other shaft back....he gave me a vw part number for a sharan/audi mounting bracket, shaft would only fit if I got one......local breakers had one!

last Saturday I stripped the car down again; fitted new driveshaft oil seal from ford (£8.10) , and the stub & intermediate shaft, all parts nuts/bolts/washers/springs in the kit were 100% correct !!!

shaft number ds466  costs £70.00 delivered with a 3 year warranty.....  ok its only been on a week but i no longer have that feeling that the splines are holding on by sheer good luck !  I will be keeping an eye on it as I have free access to a 2 poster ramp and will keep any other 90bhp-anu  engine galaxy owners updated.
