cugsy Posted September 22, 2013 Report Posted September 22, 2013 I'm losing sleep over this thing now. Every time I get something sorted, something else crops up. Yesterday, I put the aircon on for the wife - full pelt for a few seconds and what a stench from it. I'll change the pollen filter methinks...so I bought one. Looked in the Haynes joke book and checked on here. It looked awkward but doable. After half an hour peering at a body shelf with a little window in it and trying to loosen the clips that hadn't been broken by previous owners I took off the wiper arms. That itself was too easy and judging by the amount of swarf that came off I know why. The splines were almost smooth and spline- less. After another half hour trying to get to the pollen filter and tidying the badly bodged wiring that was trapped I gave up. Let it pong.... Then after making some shims for the splines I put the wipers back on. Then I spent 2 hours trying to get them not to catch and brain each other. I tried about 20 times and got soooooo close but in the end they just weren't clearing each other. Rest position means nothing - i think they are slipping on the splines. It looks like a trip to the garage tomorrow. I am getting pissed off with this car. Not much more to say lads - just a rant! John Quote

(as usual) If you're talking about the 3 bolts that remove the scuttle tray - yes they need to come out along with the scuttle tray - thats not difficult - it would be impossible to do anything without removing them. As for the pollen filter frame, there is a plastic tang (pictured in my link) that needs to be pushed to release the left hand side which then simply swings out and you pull the filter out with the frame to the left (towards the centre line). You would do well to study the Tech FAQ's and patiently do things step by step instead of blindly undoing everthing in sight. Forgive me if I offend buy you do seem to be a little like a bull in a china shop. Quote

Not all advice is 100% but is well intentioned and a bit of thought usually sorts most problems. Glad it's sorted. With a little patience you'll sort all the car out and your hate will turn to lurrrve...... Just don't try and fix all problems on the same day - even the most experienced mechanics don't attempt that. If you come against a difficult problem - e.g. the spines on the wipers - don't be afraid to ask - someone will give you a tip you didnt think of. Just about everything that can go wrong on the Shalaxy has been tacked on this forum Slowly,slowly.... BTW, when I said "Have'nt a clue what youre talking about." Mine is a single piece that goes under both. Earlier versions had a centre section and two side sections I believe. For mine you remove both wiper arms and lift the two sides then slide the down parrallel to the screen. Heres a picture of it off. The long strip in the centre and parrallel to the top edge in the shot is a U shape that hooks round the window glass. The two smaller strips at either side are where two similar strips fasten on. These stay on the glass on mine, but the screen was replaced before I got it and they may be supposed to come off the glass. Once that's off there are three bolts to remove the fibre glass panel above the engine. Once these are removed the panel slides forward out of some clips at the back and over a rubber seal (bit like a door seal). It then needs manouvering to get it out. This is easier if you have removed the air filter cover and disconnected the hose at the back of it. Quote

SilverBeast Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 I believe they did a redesign later on in the MKII production (look at the picture above). I've not been able to remove the fibreglass panel above the engine without removing the wipers because the trim around these sits over the top of it. Like I said above I believe the earlier trim was in three pieces and I guess that the middle section could be removed without removing the wipers. Quote
