Drivers Door Wind Noise

There have been numerous references on the forum to new shape Gal's suffering from this problem. Mine has been back to the dealers twice for 'adjustments' and it is as bad as ever.

 

Yesterday I did a few experiments with some masking tape and found the following,

 

-Taping the join between the door and the bodyshell didn't improve the problem.

 

-Taping around the top of the window glass didn't help either.

 

-Taping the groove at the bottom of the roof rail, at the front, didn't make any difference.

 

So I wonder if the problem isn't with the door seal at all? Maybe it is turbulence from the mirror? I don't know. But I don't get how Ford and their dealers claim this isn't a known problem when clearly, it is?

If, as may be suspected, it's wind noise from around the mirror, have you checked that the driver's door window is correctly located and closes fully into the top of its channel, and the leading and trailing edge channels? Check also for any dead insects etc inside the channels with the window wound down. Any slight gap would certainly make external noise from around the miror appear louder than it should be.

I'll give it all a good check over tomorrow Ivor. I'll try taping up the gaps on the mirror housing, I think that there wil be an immediate improvement once I've found the part causing the noise.

 

Looking back, my T reg Gal suffered from a very loud wind whistle which was caused by something in the mirror housing, and only on the drivers side!

Have you tried driving with the mirror folded forwards or backwards to see if it alters the noise? Just a thought.

I have given it a go, driving with the mirror folded flat. It didn't effect the noise at all so perhaps that eliminates the mirror.

 

Driving along with the window open, even though it was quite windy over the weekend there seemed to be an excessive amount of turbulence, again it's hard to tell where it's coming from.

 

So could it be that the door seal is ok, but the turbulence around the windows is what causes the problem? It's all very puzzling.

This seems to be getting to you now and not good enough for a late registered car, I too would be getting cross now.

 

I can only think of a few things to help you, some may seem stating the obvious but you never know.

 

Do you carry any roof luggage or have you fitted anything to the front of the car. eg mirrors, roof box, new wiperrs etc etc ??

 

Is the manufacturers mark on the window glass level with the rubber, there are 2 arrows to indicate where it should be lined up at the rearmost of the glass.

 

Has the vehicle been in an accident ?

 

Is the front windscreen glass secure, fitted correctly ?

 

Where do you live, perhaps we could compare like for like.

If anyone in the Basingstoke area wants to do a comparison on noise anytime, drop me a note....the wind noise through my door and road noise coming up through the cabin drive me batty...but maybe it's me that has the problem rather than the car (se my note on wind noise and warranty in the general forum).

I turned the radio down in my Gal today and found the wind noise OK, even with the window down it was not too bad, I also find the cabin noise reduced with all 7 seats in, guess it dampens the sound.

Thanks for the offer AndyJflet, I am in Bristol. Yes, it is getting frustrating. The worst thing dropping the car off/ collecting it from the garage only to find the problem is exactly the same.

 

My car came from Ford Direct, I can't see any sign of repairs though I am not an expert. The passenger and drivers windows seem to be positioned the same as far as the arrows go, about 1cm gap from the bottom of the arrow to the door rubber.

Have you looked at the wipers? Try putting them on when you have the wind noise and see if the note changes as the wipers move across the screen.

The mirror theory is interesting. Some cars have raised dots on the mirror edge between the mirror and the door. I would assume this is to upset the air flow and thus reduce the noise. Try afixing something on the mirror between the mirrir and the door to upset the air flow through the gap. A long shot, but it might work.
