Hi all

Still trying to replace my old Mk1. Looking at a Mk2 2002 on ebay.  dash panel pic shows a light - I can't quite make out the symbol but think it might be the small engine which the handbook (thanks big_kev) says is exhaust lamda sensor related.  of course, I may be being a complete plank.

Could anybody please tell me if that is what it is, and if it's likely to be expensive/mot issue?

(Car has no mot at the moment, and the ebay description says turbo doesn't cut in and it needs a rear exhaust box).

Never seen a mk2 tdi start from the inside, so even more in the dark than usual.

Trying to get to see it,  but not managed it yet, so don't know what codes are logged.

Any help very much appreciated.

Looks like the engine management light. It could be any number of things. Try and get the fault codes read and cleared and see what comes back.

On a TDI the glow plug light doubles up as the engine management light. Are you sure you are looking at a diesel or petrol?

Thanks for the replies - Chromedome, I'm sure it's a diesel, and according to the handbook the engine symbol, when on a diesel, is to do with the exhaust. Is that where the engine symbol displays on a mk2 dash? I can't really make it out properly. My mk1's didn't have that, afaik - certainly never saw it. Gregers, sounds a very nice car, but I'm looking at about a fifth of that (pretty much the scrap value of my last two put together. Times are tough at the moment.....)

I did a search on the forum about the exhaust/sensor, but couldn't find anything about this. I bet it's in here somewhere, but I've always struggled a bit with the search... I think this is only Mk2 diesels.

On with the search...

I had an odd experience with a garage last week where they told me the engine management light wasn't coming on. I've taken a short video of the start up sequence, but I can't see anything amiss, looks the same as it always has. What do you guys reckon? I'm hoping this works as I've had problems with links on other forums!

Xavier - Just looked at my old gal (same as yours) and the light you are missing on start up is the brake pad wear indicator. Just comes on briefly like the others.

Maybe just the bulb blown? Or you need to check pads/wiring. Wear indicators only fitted to 2 wheels, one front and one back, opposite corners(can't remember which!)

As chrome dome says - the glow plug light doubles up as the engine management light and will flash if there is a problem.

I didn't think she had wear indicators until I changed the rear pads and had to connect them up! But deffo no missing engine management light then?

Definitely no missing engine management light.

Did you get the plug and socket together good - they do seem to be a tight fit - mine are anyway(no doubt because they have to be waterproof).

Yes, though getting them back on the bracket on the caliper was another matter! I have pics from when I did the job, just need to figure out how to get them on here!
