Back in the day, when I bought a car or bike, I'd expect a wallet full of old receipts, perhaps MOTs etc. as well as a stamped service book, if there was one.

We've just bought a used Galaxy from a Ford main dealer and all we got was the stamped service book that doesn't even specify the sort of service.

When I called the dealership to get a full history, such as when was this or that replaced/repaired, they refused to tell me other than to promise to send me a copy of the latest service while under sale.

I asked what would happen if I went to the local branch of the same dealership for future servicing and was told that they would have a full service history.

When asked if I could have a printout I was told that their computer system had

crashed a year or so earlier and although it was possible to view historical records, it wasn't possible to print them out! The receptionist said that she would look through the history and /write down/ any specific items and snailmail them to me.

This seems like madness.

Is it in fact the norm these days?

What does FSH mean?

What kind of computer system can display but not print?

What rights do I have to a /full/ service history when buying a used car from a main dealer?

when i pxed my old renault laguna it had stacks of receipts of work carried out by myself and my m8 who was a renault mechanic.it was also featured in auto express many moons ago.

the lady who bought it used to park it near where i work and i asked her if she had everything passed on to her,NO was the reply.

i think dealers just use the book and thats it.

when i bought my old mk2 luckily i found a piece of paperwork for a dealer in southampton phoned them up had a chat and they printed off the last main service/cam belt change etc.which was a result as it saved me from having to get it done.

now im on my smax done the same but the guy said i was having a laff if i thought they would print out the history of my car as it was in every couple of weeks for a main service he reckoned it would take an age to do and would use LOTS of paper.

iirc you can check on the vosa site for mots/advisories?

also have a looksie on the ford etis site to see if theres any out standing problems.

oh and welcome to the forum.

...and don't forget, just because it has a full Ford Service History it doesn't mean they knew what they were doing, or even replaced parts that needed replacing! There are plenty of examples of this on this Forum.

I'm getting cynical in my old age - then again the builders at my wifes new house have just melted through the wiring for two of the alarm PIR's that I have just fitted!

Sounds the car doesnt have a FSH and the dealer is try to wedgie you! Buy only on the assumption it has no service history - cos it hasnt!

Gregers: thanks :-)

I'm uneasy about any compulsory trust situation.

At least I have a relationship with my regular mechanic. I know these main dealers not at all.

not sure what you mean, sorry. If you mean recalls, there is one stamped in my log book.

btw. what's the difference between (from the service book) 'Service Record' and 'Scheduled Maintenance Record', and why should I need to ask?

also have a looksie on the ford etis site to see if theres any out standing problems.

did that, thanks. no problems found.

oh and welcome to the forum.

delighted to be here :-)

thanks :-) I'd love to share builder stories but this prolly ain't the forum for it :-)

I look forward to passing care of my car to our longstanding garage.

Our regular garage spoke with his contact at the main dealer and confirmed that to the best of everyone's knowledge, the service history was correct as stamped.

In any case, it's already bought and on our drive, looking incredibly cooool and way to good for the likes of us!

We'll ride the first year's warranty with caution and by the time that runs out our own man will have got his hands in her innards.

He's vatable so his service will qualify.

PS. Can anyone explain why, when I try to click the '√ Like This' link on people's posts, I get an alert saying 'You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day'?

You three are the only posts I've seen on this forum and I can't 'Like' any of you.

You can check the MOT history of a vehicle online along with any advisories (flagged problems which

do not constitute a failure)

I think Gregers means that it would give you an idea of  past problems though of course it wouldn't cover servicing history - still useful to look at i find
