Hi Everyone,

Got my car going into Jennings Ford Teesside Tomorrow but I'm looking for a bit of advice, as I don't really want to get it in there if I don't have too.

My Car is a 2001 Ford Galaxy LX TDI - 1.9l Diesel with 107,000 on the clock

Basically I was driving my car and had noticed that when taking off from a stop in 1st gear, my car was shaking and struggling to set off, unless I put the revs quite high it stalls. It shakes a little bit in second when first accellerating but is okay and driving fine in higher gears.

I had driven 35 miles up the road to Newcastle and about 2 miles from the City Centre my car stalled at some lights. When I started the car back up, it wouldn't go into gear, I literally couldn't push the gearstick into any gear position but neautral, it felt as if the gears were closed. Now the clutch felt fine, as it usually does, but it still would not go in gear. I turned the engine off and could put it in gear with the engine off. So I can start the car if I have the clutch down, in 1st gear then turn the ignition. Then I'm back to square one, with the shaking when setting off in 1st.

I've also noticed on the way home that the battery light flashed a couple of times when I was driving doing about 40mph, no effect on the engine or anything, it just flashed up twice. (It hasn't done this today).

Any ideas on what it could be?

My Dad reckons it's the clutch, but if the clutch feels fine, could it be the gearbox? Or even something else...

I'm hoping it's not something expensive (I've heard the clutch and gearbox can be an expensive job) as I was thinking of trading in and getting a new car very soon.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Cheers,

Gary

Might sound daft but I would check the alternator and or it's pulley.  Though the gear change sounds like clutch it could still be the pulley.

sounds like flywheel/clutch ??

I fear it may be the flywheel, that's what they were hinting at when I took it into Jennings Ford this morning. If it is it is going to be an expensive job I think. It has a bloody Dual Mass Flywheel on it so it's gonna be a nightmare, especially since I was looking to Part Ex. on a new car in the next month or so!

I'll let you know.

Anybody had a dual mass flywheel replaced/repaired on their Galaxy? I'm wondering a usual price for the job that's all, I don't want to get ripped off!

Are you sure it has a DMF ?

Afaik it's only the 130 engines that have DMF, the 115's have a solid flywheel.

I've been into Jennings who have told me they can't do anything with it without going ahead and taking the gearbox out. They've told me it does have a DMF. They say it is pointing towards a DMF/Clutch fault but there is no way of absolutely knowing unless they get into it. I am going to go elsewhere because they've said it will be a very expensive job to go through them. I'll ring around a few garages see what they think.

Cheers.
