Argrdnr Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 For the life of me I can not undo the oil drain plug, now I fear I've ruined it, can't get a socket or spanner to grip itHEEEELLLLPPPP ME How can I get it undone Quote
Jaysm1 Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Hi, First get a new plug and washer then get a chisel and hammer and carefully hit on the edge just to turn it slightly, then it should undo with socket n ratchet or grips. Quote
sappers Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Be prepared this may strip the thread from the sump at the same time. Re-tapped mine and fitted a heli-coil insert (steel thread) into the alloy sump with a kit from ebay and a motorbike sump plug which, as a bonus has a magnet in it to catch loose filings (2 oil changes and none so far). Hope this helps. Quote
Argrdnr Posted August 12, 2013 Author Report Posted August 12, 2013 Hot the edge of the actual bolt itself? The bolt is not budging at all, even broke my socket wrench Trying to remove it :(((( Quote
Argrdnr Posted August 12, 2013 Author Report Posted August 12, 2013 Would something like this work http://bit.ly/18pmD3R Quote
sappers Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 I think a good fitting 6 sided socket or ring spanner and a long extension would be better. try tightening it a tiny bit first too. If heating it, try and heat the sump and cool the plug with a freezer spray from maplins, sometimes helps. Quote
seatkid Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 (edited) Try 9" molegrips . Remember anticlockwise to unscrew! (looking at the head). Fit a new sump plug - costs less than £2 Decent tools are the key, Ring spanners, BAHCO adjustable spanners are not cheap but worth every penny. Dont waste your money on cheap tools. Alternatively you can buy a PELA oil extractor and suck the oil out through the dipstick - easy, no mess, no sump plug removal! Edited August 12, 2013 by seatkid Quote
Argrdnr Posted August 12, 2013 Author Report Posted August 12, 2013 Thankyou,I've had a look for a plug but can't find anyAny ideas? Quote
sparky Paul Posted August 13, 2013 Report Posted August 13, 2013 You can get replacement sump plugs on that well known auction site, or a decent motor factor should be able to supply one. As said above,a bit of heat around the sump boss might help. Quote
Argrdnr Posted August 13, 2013 Author Report Posted August 13, 2013 I have looked on good ole flea bay, nothing there. If I used heat, what's the best thing to use blowtorch wise, I've looked but there's different choices. Quote
sparky Paul Posted August 13, 2013 Report Posted August 13, 2013 If you search fleabay for 'galaxy sump plug', loads shoulds come up. Look for the one with the large shoulder which is for the Ford petrol engines. The best way to put heat in is with something that can focus the heat tightly, such as a welding torch, but the refillable butane high temperature torches sold for jewellery making (and creme brulee!) can be quite effective for heating small areas. Plumber's blowtorches don't really get hot enough and have limited effect. Bear in mind that the heat will melt the plastic seal, so there will be no going back once you start. SK's suggestion to use a PELA pump might be useful, but they don't work on my 2.3 as there is stuff in the sump which blocks the path of the pipe. Quote
BrianH Posted August 13, 2013 Report Posted August 13, 2013 (edited) I've used an irwin bolt extractor on a couple of stuck and destroyed sump plugs sucessfully. Obviously still need the new one afterwards. Seehttp://www.screwfix.com/p/irwin-bolt-grip-nut-remover-set-5-pieces/96028?cm_sp=Search-_-SearchRec-_-Area1&_requestid=42085Its also on amazon or ebay. Sump plug looks like gsf can supply so you shouldn't have any problems sourcing one from pretty much any decent motor factors - seehttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Engine-Oil-Sump-Drain-Plug-for-Ford-Galaxy-95-06-/300744363791 Edited August 13, 2013 by BrianH Quote

sparky Paul Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 It's a pattern part, but should be the same as the original - M14 thread with a 13mm hex head. Quote
