Hi,

First get a new plug and washer then get a chisel and hammer and carefully hit on the edge just to turn it slightly, then it should undo with socket n ratchet or grips.

Be prepared this may strip the thread from the sump at the same time. Re-tapped mine and fitted a heli-coil insert (steel thread) into the alloy sump with a kit from ebay and a motorbike sump plug which, as a bonus has a magnet in it to catch loose filings (2 oil changes and none so far). Hope this helps.

I think a good fitting 6 sided socket or ring spanner and a long extension would be better. try tightening it a tiny bit first too. If heating it, try and heat the sump and cool the plug with a freezer spray from maplins, sometimes helps.

Try  9" molegrips . Remember anticlockwise to unscrew! (looking at the head). Fit a new sump plug - costs less than £2

Decent tools are the key, Ring spanners, BAHCO adjustable spanners are not cheap but worth every penny. Dont waste your money on cheap tools.

Alternatively you can buy a PELA oil extractor and suck the oil out through the dipstick - easy, no mess, no sump plug removal!

You can get replacement sump plugs on that well known auction site, or a decent motor factor should be able to supply one.

As said above,a bit of heat around the sump boss might help.

If you search fleabay for 'galaxy sump plug', loads shoulds come up. Look for the one with the large shoulder which is for the Ford petrol engines.

The best way to put heat in is with something that can focus the heat tightly, such as a welding torch, but the refillable butane high temperature torches sold for jewellery making (and creme brulee!) can be quite effective for heating small areas. Plumber's blowtorches don't really get hot enough and have limited effect.

Bear in mind that the heat will melt the plastic seal, so there will be no going back once you start.

SK's suggestion to use a PELA pump might be useful, but they don't work on my 2.3 as there is stuff in the sump which blocks the path of the pipe.

I've used an irwin bolt extractor on a couple of stuck and destroyed sump plugs sucessfully. Obviously still need the new one afterwards.

See

Its also on amazon or ebay.

Sump plug looks like gsf can supply so you shouldn't have any problems sourcing one from pretty much any decent motor factors - see
