Had the a/c regassed and while it was being vac'd there was a worring 'pop'. 30 mins later while enjoying cold air again, a cloud of a/c gas pours in from all the front vents! Nothing in the engine bay so my guess is it's the evaporator. Anyone removed this unit?

Looking at the TIS I need to remove most of the front interria to get the heater/evaporator unit out!

Any insight would be welcome before I start this project.

BTW, the Ford stealer wanted

Evaporator is a major headache to replace - don't know if anyone on the forum has done one themselves, but we hear that it's at least a day for an "amateur" to perform the task, so good luck if you are planning to do it yourself.

I was tempted to do my heater matrix! but when I disscussed this possabillity with my mechanic he talked me out of it! and no he didnt want the job either!

I gave the job to the guy who does my AC work as he has done a few before! and even he took longer than he quoted! two days longer than the three he quoted! nothing came apart or went back in without a fight! I spent an afternoon helping him and I came away needing a good drink afterwards! if you have the space and the patience? then go for it! if not let some other sap struggle!

Nimrod, when you were helping what do you remember of your observations? 2 days labour sounds like a grand or more! At least if I do it I will know what I bugger up! I don't mind the sound of the interia work, but I've never drained the coollant (any suggestions?) and getting at those bolts for the heater assy. from deep in the engine bulkhead don't sound to clever...then again if the summer does not improve I may not need A/C!

My observations of the job were that I had made the right choose to let someone else do the job!

if I had had the space needed to take apart and store all the dash and the electrical bits that come out with it, along with half the engine bay and wiper mech etc and the time need! then I would have attempted it  not sure if my marriage or my sanity would still be intact though? :o

the guy who did mine gave me a written quote for the work before he started, I got quotes/estimates from three garages including the local Ford dealers before I palmed the job off on someone

in his quote he broke down the parts needed, the labour costs/time needed, he even went as far as including the draining and storage of the refrigerant from the AC system and refilling it in the quote! using the old gas and just topping up for any losses saved a few quid!

even after the over run in the length of time for the job by two days the price didnt change!
