Hi, I know this has been covered so many times in so many ways but can't seem to find my particular problem.

I have 2 keys, 1 that is just a key, no buttons on, and 1 with buttons (The fob, obviously lol)

Now the fob key, when pressed the lights flash on the key but nothing happens (By this I mean it doesn't lock or unlock the car). I have seen about reprogramming the key but I have a problem.

The fob key will only start the car, if I put it in the door lock it won't turn either way. The key that doesn't have a fob will unlock the car but won't start the engine.

So is there any other way of reprogramming the fob with turning it in the door lock etc?

I know nothing about cars so please if someone could explain like they are talking to a kid lol that would be great.

Some details, I have a Galaxy Ghia TDi 1.9 2003

mmmm i suspect you have had a lock replaced.

try seeing if they both work in the rear hatch lock?

Thank you for your reply. Only the key with the fob on it works to open the boot. So looks like the lock on the drivers door has been changed. Is there any way of still programming it to work at all?

I do wish people could be arsed to SEARCH the forum!

1. Close all the vehicle doors.

2. Note:
Make sure the door lock cylinder is held in the unlock position for more than 0.5 seconds.

Insert the key into the driver door lock cylinder and turn the key from the rest position to the unlock position three times within five seconds.

3. The door lock light emitting diodes (LED)s will illuminate for 15 seconds during the remote transmitter programming mode, allowing the remote transmitter to be programmed.

4. Remove the key from the driver door lock cylinder and aim the remote transmitter at the interior rear view mirror.

5. Press and hold the LOCK button on the remote transmitter.

6. While holding the LOCK button down, press the UNLOCK button three times on the remote transmitter.

7. Release both buttons simultaneously.

8. Make sure the door lock LEDs flash five times, confirming that the remote transmitter has been programmed.

9. After a remote transmitter has been successfully programmed, the GEM will reset the programming mode, allowing a further 15 seconds to program the next remote transmitter.

10. To program additional remote transmitters, repeat steps 4 to 8.

seatkid, I wish people could be arsed to READ what I wrote ....

Let me quote something .. "Hi, I know this has been covered so many times in so many ways but can't seem to find my particular problem"

In conclusion I can be arsed to search through the forum, I have even been beyond that in that I have tried that method which I found days ago. I have also tried other methods that people have mentioned.

I even put the key in the door, did the unlock procedure like it says, yet the red light on the drivers side door doesn't stay on. It actually goes off for a bit until it starts blinking again. Even with it off I still tried but to no avail.

Sorry you got so upset, perhaps a little too harsh on my part.

BUT, afaik reprogramming a remote key is covered in the manual and is the only reprogramming procedure there is.....

If you cant get the car into programming mode (door led on continuously) then either (in the words of Steve Jobs) you're doing it wrong, or you have a fault (broken wires in the door gaitor or someone broke something when fitting the new lock). Does the central locking actually work?

Make sure you follow the procedure precisely, particularly the timing of the key movements (minimum 0.5secs max approx 1.5secs).

It should work on the passenger side lock too (mine does) , maybe even the boot lock.

Once you have the car in programming mode, its touch and go if an older key will reprogram (more precisely, the car will accept the key) as older fobs tend to die (even with new batteries and leds flashing away....)

Oh...and I expect you would already know that you would use the key that actually moves in the lock (and locks/unlocks the car) to enter program mode....

There is an alternative procedure here but I think this is for pre 97 models.

Ok I did the other method you gave me that one definately doesn't work.

I tried it again. This time I managed to get the red light to stay on (on the drivers side door that is). I held down the lock button and pressed the unlock 3 times, on the third push I released both buttons. Now the red light on the car door stayed lit, but the light on my key fob blinked 5 times. Could this be a battery issue? Or is the car just not picking up the signal?

sounds as if you are joining the duff keyfob club - mine does that - its not batteries.

So what is the solution for that then? Buy a new key fob from ebay?

Thanks for the info. Saved me from buying unneccesary batteries lol

whatever you MAKE sure you get the correct fob,the details are stamped on the side.
