dragon32 Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 Hi All, I have a big problem. I recently put my ol'gal in for MOT and part of what it failed on was play on the top of the steering column. I bought a second hand Sharan one. When going to fit it, I noticed that the play wasn't in the top bearing but the nut on the steering adjustment had come loose. Tightend it became tight again and all was well. Now the however. After re-assembling the steering wheel I got the airbag light. I tried VCDSlite but it tells me it can,t communicate with the airbag controller. I took the clock spring back off the car and measured it with a multimeter and it reads short between the two pins. Is this normal and if so how the hell does it work and why put two wires when one would have done? can anyone tell me which fuse supplies the airbag controller please? I have tried ebay for a second hand one without success. Any or all help would be most gratefully received before I pull my hair out. Thanks, Don. Quote
dragon32 Posted July 23, 2013 Author Report Posted July 23, 2013 Hi again, Sorry about this but I have another question about my airbag problem and its this. Should the back of the clockspring be covered in grease? Mine is and I am wondering if it should be clean. Thanks, Don Quote
SilverBeast Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 If you've had the clock spring connectors apart I'm pretty sure you will need to reset it by using VCDS-LITE or VAG-COM to clear the faults before the light goes out. I wouldn't fiddle with the clock spring any more until you get VCDS talking to the controllers. Does it see any other controllers? Quote
dragon32 Posted July 23, 2013 Author Report Posted July 23, 2013 Hi Silverbeast, Vcdslite only sees two controllers. That of the ABS and instruments. It says it cannot conect to the airbag. What realy worries me is that when measuring the wiring to the clock spring it reads dead short. I dont see how if it was designed that way that it would activate the airbag as either power or earth would be missing. Don Quote
