charles Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 This weekend I will change the gear oil. I bought 2 l Ford spec gear oil and a 8 mm PVC tube to fill the gearbox from above. Seems to me a good thing to do, the car is 8 years old and when checking the level, I found what metal pieces around the plug, probably from wear.Does the gearbox drain plug a new washer? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Always a good idea to fit a new washer - assuming that the old one will come off (hasn't been squashed and distorted so that it no longer passes over the bolt's thread?) Quote
seatkid Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Not sure there is any benefit in changing gear oil nowadays - don't know if the gearbox has a magnetic drain plug either.Make sure the oil is correct - IIRC the VTX box is similar to the sierra in it requires a very special oil (looks more like ATF?) - ordinary gearbox oil will see it fail in a very short time. charles Posted November 9, 2004 Author Report Posted November 9, 2004 did the gear box change for the manual 2.3 gearbox last month.Hereby the report.Followed the Haynes manual instructions:There is no washer at the drain plug and no at the filling plug.Just to be sure I fitted a copper washer at the drain plug.2 Liters of gear oil came out, did not find very much metal wear in it.I re-filled it with 2 liters of new oil via a funnel/transparant PVC tube from above the engine bay, the other side of the tube sticking into the filling hole. I bought 2 bottles at the ford dealer, it is red coloured oil (eur 17/liter). The gear change did improve, it is gearing as butter. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 I think we can understand what you mean! Glad it went well and that you are pleased with your work on the car.. Quote
