jadakiss2009 Posted July 21, 2013 Report Posted July 21, 2013 Looking at buying a mk2 I want to get an average miler to reflect price what would you call a high miler? Quote
acecard Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 Well its not an exact science but average mileage is supposed to be around 12,000 per year (miles). Personally, my average is 8000.And that doesn't tell the whole story - depends on how it was driven, terrain etc.12000 mostly motorway driving and 12000 around town create different stresses on a car, so its useful to know its history and owners, and of course service history - you want to know if timing belt has been renewed if necessary.Use a price guide like Parkers to get an idea of how much the price is affected by mileage. seatkid Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 Previous owners/likely what it was used for, mileage, age, condition, service history (cambelt and oil type important), is genuine oil filter fitted, repair history, accident history, hpi check, long mot (check advisories) whether everything works, warranty and most important a detailed inspection all of this is important. Check everything - tyres inc spare (and whether winch works) - aircon working, look underneath - brakes/suspension, all windows working, wipers not slow, take for a good test run, listen for knocking/banging/grinding noises - avoid automatics completely - check acceleration is as per spec and will accelerate to 70mph briskly. Check gauges all showing normal - try a high speed run on motorway to check for overheating, check coolant is correct colour (pink not brown). Then inspect it again. This is not a complete list by any means. Quote
seatkid Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 oh and dont forget to check the central locking and remote key, also should have at least two keys. Quote
cugsy Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 Curious about the 'avoid the automatic' statement. I had a MKI with auto that was fine. they can't all be bad. I need an auto box because of arthritis in me left foot..boo hoo etc. All of my other autos have been fine too. Have you had bad auto galaxies or just don't like automatics? Quote
seatkid Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 Feedback from this forum. Far too many Galaxy automatics develop problems at high mileage that simply cannot be fixed. Its a general opinion that the Jatco boxes are "on the limit" with a large car like the Galaxy and they simply dont have any way of maintenance - just changing the oil is a difiicult job and never mentioned as a service requirement (which it should be).Towing with an auto is often a very early death for the box. In other words, once an auto starts with a problem it usually scrap. Virtually no problems reported with the manual gearbox (apart from gear selector cables/mechanism which are fixable) Quote
