Firstly I'd like to say hi as I'm new here.

I searched google for my problem and came across this forum. I've had a look about on here and searched but can't find anything that matches my problem. Whilst looking you all seemed so friendly and helpful so I decided to sign up.

Ok here goes.....

I picked the car up on Friday from a guy who took it in as a px. It's been sitting there for some time which by my reckoning was about a year. Obviously the battery was flat but jump started fine and all seemed good. On my way home all was fine (other than a bit of a lack in power but then it had been sat for ages) until the box then started playing up.

It will pull of in 1st and change to 2nd fine. 2nd to 3rd & 3rd to 4th it revs right up to about 4000rpm before changing only after I lift off the accelerator. 4th to 5th gear is fine.

If is put it in tiptronic mode it will go through all the gears fine without revving high and will change down the box fine in both modes.

Drove back about 70 miles and put it straight through an mot which it passed fine with no advisories. I had the garage also read for any fault codes whilst there including the gearbox but it came back with nothing.

On Saturday the car displayed Alternator Workshop and died on me. I eliminated other problems and replaced the alternator on Sunday and all was good.

I've noticed that when I first start the car and drive off with the car in drive it goes through all the gears fine for a short time. Monday was about 500 - 600 yards then it stopped again and this morning it was about a mile or two when it decided to drop down a gear and play up again.

It was advertised as having a problem with not wanting to rev but this seems the opposite. This is what was in the advert....

"I took this car in part exchange it was running fine and drove very good

it was parked up for a while I charged the battery up the car starst up and drives but don't want to rev up ive been told by a mechanic that it might be the throttle body control unit or something down those lines"

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Adam.

Yeah; could be fluid level or the valve body playing about. If you have VAG-COM you can monitor the gearbox as you whizz about and look for anything strange going on. This is especially true if you can make it faulty more or less on demand.

VAG-COM is not much off eBay for the lead and software and with a Galaxy a worth while investment.

Change fluid then have a see what she does.

Changed the fluid last night but made no difference. Anyone got any idea how much oil the gearbox holds? I know that the torque converter will hold some but how how much should be in the box and be able to be drained out?

I would, using VAG-COM reset the transmission adaptations. There is a couple of ways to do that but a reset and try to drive again and then look for the flare ups. But without codes from VAG-COM you're stabbing in the dark.

There are various issues with fixes for the 5 speed box but all involve a scan before you proceed or you'll be hunting for it for ages!

Can you get it scanned? VAG-COM and lead from eBay £15 well worth it.

Cheers Steve.

Will have a look and get one ordered. You got a link to what I should be getting by any chance?

Hi Steve,

I know it's been a little while but things have been a bit hectic. I got the lead etc but the scan came up with no faults!

How do I go about resetting the transmission adaptations?

The other thing I have noticed recently whilst having a bit of a play about is that the box will change fine if the vehicle is going down a decline but as soon as its on level ground again it doesn't like it and chucks it back down a gear and then won't change back up. Could this be something to do with the Throttle Position Sensor?
