hi have recently bought a 2005 2.3 ghia galaxy ive only been driving it a few weeks,it cut out a couple of times on a long trip down the coast, all i done was switch the engine off wait a few mins and away it went,a few days ago it broke down when the wife was driving and all the kids in the car, totally dead apart from ignition lights they all lit up but nothing, called the rac who came out and took a puzzled look at our car, after a few attempts at starting it whilst i was away getting the spare key,it sparked into life, where he said you have some form of engine management relay problem,so he said he would follow me to a local garage where its been for a couple of days where it has started and driven ok,????on my way to the garage the car wasnt driving as nicely as it normally does and sounded like the engine was pinking when i revved it quite hard up through the gears etc any suggestions would be great as we need our car back many thanks.

Hi welcome to the forum

I think you could have two problems, the cutting out whilst driving could be due to a faulty camshaft or crankshaft sender but also could be due to an idle control valve, When it cutout was it when the engine was idling or when at a constant throttle/accelerating.

The problem of the ignition lights only was this when trying to start the car - if it was check using the search facility on the forum as the is a regular relay that needs replacing and I think the post includes a how to with pictures

Best wishes

Sounds very much like RELAY 27 (30) - there is a FAQ on here for changing one. Did my Mk1 recently took about 40mins end to end to change it out.

Cost about £10 from euro car parts or about the same from Fords.

Worth changing just in case ... other bits do cause trouble but not as much as that relay.

Is the mk1 exactly the same as the mk2 for changing relay 27/30 as going to attempt it Tomoz and is it advised to get the relay from ford or a car parts place gsf etc

And it was started from cold or not started as that was the case but its been plugged in and no fault codes came up so going to try the relay

Also found the fuse box by the battery the main power cable had had a bad repair and dodgy solder and if you wiggled it it caused the revs to drop etc so fingers crossed it is that if not the relay 27.

Replaced relay 30 and cleaned up power cable and now runs like a dream.

Unless you removed the crimp, cleaned it out, fluxed it properly and re soldered the crimp back on the power cable  with a blow torch, its unlikely you fixed this. This common problem  caused by faulty manufacture, usually requires a new cable. The symptoms are heat build up at the crimp which usually damages (melts/chars) the fusebox (in the engine bay)
