When I put key in ignition and turn it to start the engine I don't even get a click. This is happening more and more frequently. I have fitted a new battery and replaced batteries in key fob. Any advice welcome.

Does the dash light up and remain bright when you try to start or does it go all dim?

Is the car a manual or automatic? (auto neutral inhibit switch)

Has the key been opened at any time? (PATS chip fell out) - have you tried the spare key? (in case it did)

It's a manual. Got the damn thing started 1/2 hour ago. On my way home from work. Had to call at sainsburys. Came out gues what? Car wouldn't start again. After a while it started & after driving 20 yds it cut out but fortunately started immediately after. Called at fuel station, filled up, car started so here I am updating this post at home. Certainly got me baffled.

Isn't there a relay that is known for having dry joints that stops it turning over, or does that just stop it firing? Or is it only on the diesels?

K191 Crypto Transponder Relay (Immobiliser)

Heres the circuit and location (for cars built after 2000.9)

Could also be a faulty starter solenoid or wiring or dicky ignition switch (known to happen). Needs a multimeter to check the circuit voltages when attempting a (non-functioning) start

I had a similar problem so called out the AA man and it turned out to be a poor connection on lead to solenoid, quick clean and tighten sorted it out.
