Guest DaveWhittall Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 02 Galaxy Ghia TDI 115 bhp. Ive had my Galaxy for 1 month now.Can anyone tell me how the auto dim rear view mirror works.I have driven at night a few times and the rear view mirror never seems to darken.obviously there is a photoelectric sensor somewhere but where?? Also Ive just been to France on holiday and averaged 58.3 mpg on the journey between Paris and Calais. Of course I am overwhelmed (espescially as my last car was a 2 litre petrol galaxy) But is this good mpg?? Are there any featuresthat you guys could make me aware of because I just don't like the Official Fraud Handbook. Cheers Dave Quote
Guest T120 Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 Dave Yes by my figures it is very good I seem to get around the 36 - 40 mark whether knocking about or 70 ish on the motorway. Must keep your speed down to less than 50 :( Quote
iainkirk Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 Autodim only fitted to 2004 model I think? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 The way to tell is where the mirror just held onto the screen, by either a single round block or with a trim section from the mirror leading up to the headlining? no trim strip means no self dipping mirror :( Quote
Tigger Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 Mine 2003 with auto dim. The sensor is just under the mirror and looks like a small glass bead! Also as Nimrod says the mirror is not the same as a standard! It does go darker when headlights hit it! Was it part of an option pack? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 not an option as far as I can see but only available on ghia/2.8ghia according to spec sheet Quote
Guest DaveWhittall Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 The age of my Gal is 52 plate I bought it when it was 14 months old and the handbook covers auto dim so maybe it was an added extra??There is trim going to the roof lining and at the bottom of the mirror is a small square (around 3mm sq and looks a bit like the material they use to make solar panels, photoelectric?) which I thought was the remote central locking sensor but that appears to be on the other side.I'll try it tonight by shining a torch on it!!! Guest SA Intruder Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 Auto Dim looks like this - important bit is the sensor at the lower edge, centre. Also, the dead giveaway is the lack of dim lever.....nothing there to flick! Quote
Dally Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 SA Do you know if one could be retro fitted? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 IIRC I have seen them advertised on one of my many VW spares web sites, it would have been for another model in the VW range! Boredom! sorry Bora or Passat, but I'm sure with enough brute force and connector block one could be made to fit  Quote
Dally Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 NimrodI'll keep my eyes out for one as my next project - now that the dvd stuff is in. But then again I did contemplate those 3rd row armrests didn't I? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 what to get next? theres so much I fancy but these look like my next project.........http://www.fk-automotive.de/images/produkte/FKXFO70.jpg now to find a UK stockist Quote
Dally Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 That lot is too advanced for me - wish you luck in the search of UK stockist (lots of it). Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 I sort of have found one but they are just a middle man whose has the stuff pass through his ware house! I have my indy VW mechanic looking for a full suspension kit for me, I'm just waiting for a call back on kits and prices! Quote
Guest JonathanK Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 I reckon if you got 53.8MPG out of a 115 PD the computer's reading wrong or there's a blockage in the fuel line. Either that or tractors were overtaking you on the A1. JK Quote
Guest JonathanK Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Sorry. that should have read 58.3 but even 53.8 would be flippin' amazing. Maybe they have different derv in France - longlife. JK Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 How does the auto-dim work? Is it a thin LCD layer over the glass that gradually darkens to cut light transmission, or is there a motor that moves the mirror in a similar way to the manual lever? Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 LCD layer within the glass/reflector laminate. There is a sensor forward facing and the one you can see in the photo rear facing. The front sensor "arms" the mirror when the ambient light level drops for some time. The rear sensor senses the headlight lux. It works very well. Quote
MrT Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 If you wanted to retro-fit one, how would you remove the old one from the windscreen without damage. It seems to be permanently fixed. Quote
ridway Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Hard driving in France 1100 mile round trip, 4 up, plus luggage and aircon on auto. I returned 29mpg from a 2.3 petrol. I was quite pleased as it was better than I expected. Rich Quote
