Intermittent Abs And Speedo Fault

Galaxy ghia 1.9tdi 03 plate - the abs light turns on and off - seems to turn off when restart the car and the speedo sometimes stops working too.

 

This is a car im looking at getting from someone as a swap with my own car as im in desperate need of a people carrier and have very little spare cash at the moment. I have searched a few sites and have noticed that this is a common problem. Being a single mum of 4 kids can someone please give me some advise on this ? Is it likely to be a big expensive problem ?
