Hi

I tried to undo the wheel nuts on my MK2 Galaxy Ghia 130bph TDI but had no joy as they were just too tight on the front having recently had 2 front tyres fitted.

All I want to do is check the calipers as one sometimes sticks.

Can any one tell me the correct Torque settings as I have been told various figures,my plan is to go to the tyre place and get them to check they are at the correct setting.

The other thing is that if they are on too tight how the heck are you expected to get them undone in the event of a flat.? 

Just to add that it's got the original alloys on.

125lb/ft I use a breaker bar to undo mine.  I had a bit of a struggle when I had a puncture on a rear tyre last year (flat in 30sec).

 

Even after I got the bolts out the wheel needed "a good kick" as the alloy was a tight fit over the centre cap on the rear hub.  Not much fun when it's only on the jack.

Yes, 170Nm (125lb ft) is the official torque setting for a MK 2

 

 

My Mk1 alloys I tighten to 140Nm and are easily removed using an extendable wheel wrench, or a torque wrench.

 

Tips:

 

Clean the bolt threads (use solvent or oil and a toothbrush) and bolt/alloy seats and lightly lubricate/grease, also clean the mating faces on the alloy and hubs and lightly grease (I use LMF grease - others may recomend copper grease)

 

I personally prefer a torque wrench  to remove the bolts and particularly the locking wheel bolt as the car wrench and extendable wrench are angled rather than at 90 deg to the wheel.

 

If the alloys are corroded to the hub and wont come off easily, then with the wheel jacked off the ground, loosen the bolts a couple of turns, lower the car putting weight on the wheel, this usually seperates the wheel from the hub, otherwise lower it completely and rock the car sideways to seperate the wheel from the hub. Re-lift the car with the jack and continue to remove the wheel.

If they dont undo by hand, then stand on the bar and bounce on it ,they will soon move then lol

 

Not recommended for the locking bolt as its easily damaged and you'll then have a problem getting it out.

Grr! Had the car in a week ago for a wheel bearing. Went to check the torque on the front wheel and had to muller the hub cap to get it off. It'd been taped on the outside to hold it on but unbeknown to me they'd also used rubber gasket type stuff to glue it on to the wheel. Ended up using a tyre leaver to get the thing off. Who in their right mind think doing this sort of stuff is a good idea? If the cap's dodgy just keep it off the car and tell me they didn't put it on because it was loose. Having said that, it was fine when it went in...

Problem is big dave they're all like that. trying to find a decent garage is nigh impossible, this one knows VAG cars so thought I was sorted. Maybe just need to learn to do more myself. Just glad I discovered it when I had, rather than at 10pm in the rain and in a hurry to get home.
