gemini666 Posted April 7, 2013 Report Posted April 7, 2013 hi there i had a problem with my abs light on all the time had it plugged in and it was the reluctor ring on the off side front after looking at it i could see it wasnt turning so today i changed it, i undid the track rod end and the 2 allen nuts underneath and the main nut that bolts the drive shaft on then managed to get the drive shaft out of the wheel i took the ring out and it had snapped cleaned it all up with a wire brush put the new one on put back drive shaft bolted every thing back up i did have a problem with the track rod end any way put another one on from another galaxy that i am breaking did every thing up so nothing was loose put the wheel back on took it for a run up the road well i was well chuffed as abs light went out great but then the front started vibrating and shaking as if a wheel was going to fall off i checked it all out and i cannot see anything that could be up, the track rod end does seem to be very loose as you can move it and it is done right up tight so now i am stuck as dont know what to do if any one could shed some light on it would be great Quote
SilverBeast Posted April 7, 2013 Report Posted April 7, 2013 May be worth checking that the Drive shaft CV joint and inner tripoidal? joint are lined up correctly. Did you replace the hub bolt? This is a "stretch" bolt that should be replaced every time it is removed. It should be torqued up and then turned through a further 90 degrees. Quote
a18nkd Posted April 7, 2013 Report Posted April 7, 2013 Also if the track rod end is tight i.e nuts nipped up tight and there is still play in the track rod the it sounds like the rod end needs replaced can you feel the wobble throu the steering wheel or is it just the front of the car shaking ? Sorry thinking about it I'm not sure it would run if the inner tripodal joint was not engaged properly I don't think it would turn properly any way. You could try lifting the front wheel off the ground and see if the drive shaft looks to be running true when you turn the wheel by hand. If you can see any eccentricity then that would translate to a bad vibration. Quote
BigDog Posted April 7, 2013 Report Posted April 7, 2013 When you say you can move the track rod end, do you mean there is play in the joint, or do you mean you can rock it? You do need to be able to rock it, since it must move with the suspension going up and down, there is a balljoint at the end of the rack (the inner end of the track rod) which will allow the whole track rod to be rocked a little by hand, but there should be no play in the in/out direction which allows the wheels to point in even slightly different directions. Possibly there is another explanation: When I got my Alhambra there was all sorts of shaking going on from the front and the back wheels. This was down to 2 problems: 1) The aftermarket alloys fitted by the previous owner had the wrong size centering rings fitted. 2) He hadn't realised the wheels were made for taper seating bolts and had fitted flat seat bolts. The combination of the above meant that every time you took a wheel off and replaced it, it would go back in a slightly different position and the wheel centres were not concentric with the hubs. One of the centering rings was so out of position that the wheel ran buckled just because it couldn't go down flat on the hub face. After getting the centring rings changed and a set of the proper seat taper bolts, the tyres balanced it was perfect. All the best, Matt Quote
viperclive Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 I had a similar problem that Matt spoke about, only like a plumb I didn't torque my wheel studs up after doing a job on one of my front wheels, the noise and vibration sounded as though a caliper was falling off but disappeared as I increased speed (centrifugal speed) that was just loose studs. daddyfixit Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 reading your posts it sounds as though the trackrod end you swapped over is worn out ? and that's why you can feel the wheel wobbling as you shake it, even though you have tightened it up. Quote
