chromedome Posted March 28, 2013 Report Posted March 28, 2013 Hi Galaxy failed it's MOT today on the following:- Offside Headlamp bulb out of alignment, apparently fitted upside down. That's me I'm afraid. Nearside flexible brake hose twisted and rubbing on inside of wheel. Nearside Inner CV Boot split (removal of driveshaft required). Been quoted £140 - £150 to fix which I thought was quite reasonable. Not bad for an 8 year old car, however, only 51,960 miles on the clock. I had car as a Ford Direct car back in 2005 so the mileage is definitely genuine. HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE Quote

Trislander Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 im pretty sure some garages has tool to remove inner cv boot which means the drive shaft doesnt have to be removed Quote
tom-tom1 Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 Thought the inner boot was not an MOT item, outer ( near the wheel is ). £140 to straighten brake hose and change lightbulb ? Quote
acecard Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 (edited) Hi Galaxy failed it's MOT today on the following:- Offside Headlamp bulb out of alignment, apparently fitted upside down. That's me I'm afraid. :blink:can u fit them upside down? iirc theres a small hole cutout which has to fit into the bulb holder correctly. Edited March 29, 2013 by acecard Quote
chromedome Posted March 29, 2013 Author Report Posted March 29, 2013 seatkid I bought the car back in 2005 and it only had 6k on the clock so I don't see how one is born every minute. Yes I had managed to fit the bulb incorrectly. It was not sitting properly as mentioned. I don't know about the inner drive shaft boot but the failure referred to a document section in the MOT test. Flexible brake hose had been rubbing against the inside of the front wheel so does need changing, the system will need bleeding after it is changed. Quote
daddyfixit Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 inner cv boots are now part of mot test, same applies to inner boots as it does to outer ones, i think you take the outer cv joint off and slide new boot down over the inner cv joint, then refit outer joint and cv boot. ????? new flexy hose and bleed that corner, or go mad and do a full fluid change !!! easy to get bulbs wrong, my drivers new bulb is covered in blood and has a piece of rubber glove still trapped in the retainer !!!! daddyfixit Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 so was the sliced finger !! i seen my a*se bigtime when my finger got stuck in the glove, pulled back and slices under fingernail. so the bloods on the bulb, finger from glove still in there too !!! but i won a pair of nightbreaker bulbs in a magazine competition, so when a bulb next goes i will fit the pair (carefully) Quote

chromedome Posted March 30, 2013 Author Report Posted March 30, 2013 I find it much quicker to remove the headlight(s), job done in about ten minutes and no red bulbs. Quote
acecard Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 So how did you I find it much quicker to remove the headlight(s), job done in about ten minutes and no red bulbs. But how did you manage to get the bulb in the wrong way with the headlight removed - I mean you can actually see what you are doing rather than feeling your way wih the headlight in situ? ghr Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 Always wondered what I'd do if I got pulled over for a headlight out on a dark French motorway and had to change a bulb so I bought a set of long torx screwdrivers from Machine Mart (product code: 040210659 £18.59) and removed the headlights completely. You're right ten minutes. Quote
chromedome Posted April 3, 2013 Author Report Posted April 3, 2013 Car now has an MOT. The headlight bulb retaining spring/clip was bent causing the bulb not to seat properly so I hadn't fitted it upside down. Quote
