chrislloydie Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Last couple of weeks the abs light has been coming on when braking at slow speeds. Eg. When parking or doing a three point turn etc. When the warning light comes on, the brakes vibrate / rumble but the car doesnt stop. The pedal needs to be pumped to get the brakes to stop the car. I now have a cracked front bumper from it catching me out when manouvering and I nudged a bollard. Any help please guys? Quote

chrislloydie Posted March 10, 2013 Author Report Posted March 10, 2013 Removed the front offside wheel and found the abs sensor wire partially worn through about half way up. Thinking thats why its an intermittent problem at the moment. Ive looked for a replacement wire but there is a massive difference in price. From £15 up to over £100. Mines a 02 plate tdi 115 auto (pd). Anyone know the part number? Quote
dlt1617 Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 My 02 1.9 tdi has an abs sensor which also includes the cable that goes to the front brake wear sensor on the passengerside which is the expensive one - not sure about the driveside..... Dave Quote
viperclive Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 Cut into damaged area, slide a piece of heatshrink along cable, now solder cut cables together, slide heatshrink over soldered area and use the wifes hair drier on hot to shrink, jobs a good un,, heatshrink you can buy a pack of assorted lengths, colours n sizes from Halfords for a few quid. chrislloydie Posted March 14, 2013 Author Report Posted March 14, 2013 Update to the problem. I ordered an abs sensor from ebay for £17, my drivers side does not have the brake pad sensor, the passenger side does. Took about half an hour to remove the old one, using drill, hammer, screwdrivers and pliers. Once finally removed, I cleaned the inside qith some emery cloth and the new sensor slipped in fairly easy. Took car for a drive and abs light went out at about 20mph. So, hopefully thats that sorted. Thankfully cheap and fairly straightforward fix. Quote
xavier Posted March 14, 2013 Report Posted March 14, 2013 Thanks for the info Chris, I have to do mine at some point prior to the MOT. Quote
xavier Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 Did mine today. Was near-side so needed the combined lead. £23 from ebay. Tips for anyone else attempting this, turn the wheel so you can get at the sensor (I foolishly didn't when I started off), with a bit of luck getting some of the plastic out of the inside will allow you to press it out from the back. If it doesn't move drill out the plastic. I used a small drill bit, try not to brake it. After a few broken drill bits and breaking a screwdriver I'd managed to get enough out to get it part way out of the back. Then struggled trying to pull the remainder out the front. Ended up using a 5ml allen key which had just the right length at the 90 degree bend to press it out. Took me 2 hours in all, but I'm slow. Quote
