Only One Windscreen Wiper Working

Hi,

 

I've got an '07 Plate 2.0 Galaxy TDCi Ghia and the driver's side (only) windscreen wiper has stopped working. 

 

I'd left the wipers on auto and they tried to clear some snow from the windscreen but couldn't but then worked fine after I cleared the winscreen.  I then parked the car up and didn't use it for a couple of days and then when I used it again the wiper on the passenger side worked fine but the drivers side didn't.

 

Have taken it to the mechanic who thought it was a faulty wiper motor (there are 2 wiper motors on my Galaxy) so replaced it and it worked very briefly (half an hour or so) and then stopped again.  Mechanic found it appeared to work if he 'wiggled' the stalk but that appears to have stopped working as well now - all the time though the passenger side wiper works as does the rear wiper and washer jets front and back.

 

Does anyone have any ideas on this one, please?  Are there two relays, two fuses (one for each side)?  Mchanic is tearing his hair out with this one!
