Oil Level Check, Warm Or Cold Engine

Sorry for the dumb question but dont have an owners manual. Shiuld I be checking the oil level in my 2002 tdi pd engine with the oil cold or at running tempersture?

Dont matter so long as its between the marks on the dipstick,although to get an accurate reading the engine will be cold so the oil hasnt been pumping round

That way anything that is going to be be measured will have drained into sump

How much between min and max. Actually, IIRC there isn't a "MAX" written on it is there, it's just a hatched area which is difficult to see under the tar-like substance that passes for engine oil in these things.

I have always supplied/used Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel (Spec VW505.01) and I must admit my oil is remarkably clean to others I've seen. Xavier, I would think after sampling some of your home brew everything would look like a hashed area. :wacko:

Ive been using pd engine oil. Not really sure what the difference is to other oil. But I was told that ours is a pd engine and so needs the pd spec oil.

I think it has to do with high pressure on the camshaft so oil to VW Spec 505.01 is required to prevent premature wear.. I would think if you have used oil for the PD engine you should be ok.
