sparky Paul Posted January 17, 2013 Report Posted January 17, 2013 To read the codes, you need a laptop and a VAG-COM cable, about 7 quid off ebay from UK sellers, and the free VCDS-lite software from the RossTech website. Generic code readers won't see the SRS/Airbag system. Taking the bulb out is no good, as it lights during the start-up self test, and failure to illuminate and then go out is now a MOT fail. Most common failure with the Airbag system is the steering wheel airbag slip ring, or 'clockspring'. I'm not sure if replacing will put the fault light out, or whether you will have to reset it manually - but you could do with identifying where the fault lies first, in any case Quote
SilverBeast Posted January 17, 2013 Report Posted January 17, 2013 I know the Mk II's (with side airbags) have a connector below/behind the plastic panel on the edge of the seat back about half way up. I reset someone's light after this had been detached when someone had moved the backrest and heard a click. If you intend to keep the vehicle it will be well worth your money to get a VAG-COM lead anyway. Quote
gazmech Posted January 17, 2013 Author Report Posted January 17, 2013 i bought one of them and had to send it back. Quote
dlt1617 Posted January 17, 2013 Report Posted January 17, 2013 I agree with Sparky Paul but you said you had it connected to a Snap on diagnostic machine did that show Driver's air bag? If it did change the contact scroll/air bag slip ring/clock spring (these are all the same thing!) Dave Quote

dlt1617 Posted January 17, 2013 Report Posted January 17, 2013 Hi Gazmech you comment you bought a code reder but get a connection error what software is it using i.e. is it one of the fleabay code readers that uses vcds software? Dave Quote

dlt1617 Posted January 17, 2013 Report Posted January 17, 2013 33075337110 on ebay is what you would need to check the codes, I had a problem with a 99 Galaxy that had a fault code for the driver's air bag I bought a slip ring from fleabay secondhand...the light was still on after I fitted it....bought a secondhand air bag....the light was still on after I fitted it...bought another slip ring...finally fixed as the first "new" air bag slip ring was faulty! dlt1617 Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 I think it includes a link to VCDS Lite which would need to be installed, do a search on here and you'll find plenty of info on setting up the interface. Dave Quote
gazmech Posted January 18, 2013 Author Report Posted January 18, 2013 cheers Dave. hope it works on mine with out a link error. Lol Quote
dlt1617 Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 I was being lazy as I had to take the dogs for a walk - see link below! http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/download/index.html Best wishes Dave Quote
SilverBeast Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 You will also need to install the drivers supplied with the cable. I have used mine with both Windows 98 and XP. I understand it can be a pain with Vista or 7. Quote
gazmech Posted January 18, 2013 Author Report Posted January 18, 2013 thats the thing i got windows 7 on all pc's including wifes laptop. Quote
BigDog Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 The latest drivers are here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm Works fine with Vista, not yet tried with 7. Sometimes you have to go into Device Manager and re-assign the COM port to get the software to talk to the interface cable. Good luck Matt Quote
