Hi all,

First post here from a new member. I have a 2004 2.0 Petrol Alhambra with what I understand to be a VW engine.

Recently after a fairly long drive the battery light in the dash came on and abruptly i lost power and died. Managed to get home and a multimeter between the main out of the alternator showed no signs of charging. Battery fairly new and load tested fine.

I bought a replacement rtx alternator off car parts 4 less but once swapped I still have the same problem. So either i've been unlucky enough to purchase a duff part or something in the car is telling the alternator not to charge.

Any ideas where to look first please.

Many thanks!

Jake

P.S. Apologies for the duplicate post, I think I posted in wrong section initially! Could a mod move the other? It's in questions about the galaxy. Thanks.

Ok update on this before you wade in with advice...

I was thrown a little because my new alternator is a little different from the old. With the old one the battery light would go out a few seconds after starting whereas with the new one it stays on until you give it a bit of gas - 1500rpm or so. Anyway, one you do give it some gas you get the c14v I was expecting and it stays that way so I guess I can live with that.

Thanks.

That sounds more like an old dynamo - never had an alternator doing that but it doesn't sound A1 - no doubt someone will confirm if its normal
