I have a 1998 1.9TDI (90bhp?) which has always been very sluggish. A nifty artic has been known out accelerate it! I put a new MAF and replaced the pipes going from the N75 unit to the turbo. Full power was restored but a related problem has now become apparent. In say 3rd or 4th gear and acclerating hard when the engine is working quite hard, it gets to about 3,500 RPM and then there is a distinct hesitation and the engine reverts to it's previous not being able to pull the skin off a rice pudding. If I turn the engine off and restart all is OK until the same thing happens again. I suspect that the turbo is over blowing and the ecu is shutting the system down into a safe mode. Any suggestions on where to look please. Edited by hookie

hi try the little pipe inside the ecu that is linked to the map sensor (mass air pressure) there is loads of posts on here on how to fix these things please keep us informed on how you get on as it sounds like it's still going into limp mode Edited by a18nkd

Hi and thanks. Have found the relevant section on removing the ECU to get at the internal MAP sensor pipe. What size pipe is it please? It looks like a specific part or can I use a piece of standard pipe?

Have you got any code from VAG COM? Sounds like the turbo is coked up, mine was better after running on shell v-power performance diesel (and towing a caravan a couple of times!), though since it's started doing it again recently, I'm back to do driving keeping the revs below 3K, until I get the caravan out.

i can't remember what size the pipe was that i took off but i had a spare bit of tubing in my shed it's only about 100mm ish long as long as it fits over the nipples on either end i would guess it's fine the internal size was between 3mm and 6 mm sorry about not being precise but will let you know if i find out the exact size

I don't want to worry you but my 52 plate1.9 tdi suffered the same, I put it down to the turbo vanes being coked up that was until I entered the m4 at Swindon accelerated hard and then bang went the turbo along with £800 out my wallet, so be prepared!

hi richj i have a 1998 gal 1.9 tdi and had the seals go on me while i was driving (revved the knackers off my poor engine)and it cost me around £400 supplied and fitted and i don't think the mk1's turbo had variable veins they have a wastegate + acuator instead

The pipe that was inside my ECU was black lengh is 85mm the outside diameter is 7mm internal diameter is 2.5mm the rubber is very flexible so would fit over the two nipples with alittle wiggle hope this helps
