MatTdi Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Hi all,After my Alhambra was regassed and the dye put in I still have no cold air  the stealer wants to start changing compressors!!! The compressor looks like it not engaging the clutch as it never spins, I can move the center of the pulley while the engine is off and have measured 12v to the compressor, the other wire shows no volts so I guess its ground? Is this normal? does anyone know what the ohms measurement for the clutch is? is there a relay or other I can look at? Its a 2002 Tdi SE any Ideas welcomed as I dont want to pay to substitute parts to find out it a duff relay after they change the compressor....... Thanks in advanceM@ Quote
charles Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 the clutch is actuated by a solenoid. When airco light on, current will move the solenoid. If you measure 12v and the center well does not turn maybe the solenoid is gone. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Yes, but if system is low on gas there will be low pressure which will inhibit the compressor starting. Best thing is to momentarily connect 12volts across compressor clutch, then if it engages you know it is OK (up to a point). Trouble is that if compressor has been run for a while with no gas, and hence no lubricant, it will be u/s and need changing once the rest of the system has been sorted out. Quote
MatTdi Posted June 21, 2004 Author Report Posted June 21, 2004 ok I checked again tonight and I have 12v feed to the compressor which switches off when the CC is off or on ECON on AUTO I get a constant 12v feed, so I guess its not a low / high pressure cutout.I measuered the resistance of the clutch solenoid? and it looks to be open circuit, anybody know what it should read? The next question I guess is can you get a new clutch or solenoid? or is it really a new compressor..... Anybody know a good independant around MK or Northampton? Thanks in advanceM@ Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Try your local motor factor - IIRC the compressor for the TDI is made by someone like Sandoz? Sure someone else will add the correct name for the manufacturer soon... Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Correct brand name for compressor is CRAP Quote
charles Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 as the solenoid is a wired coil, therefor the resistance must be very low, maybe some ohms.Maybe you can find a company that can service the compressor unit / or is it a non-servicable item?. Quote
MatTdi Posted June 23, 2004 Author Report Posted June 23, 2004 OK Got a reply from Sanden and it loks like the coil or diode pack is dead. Quote:The resistance of the coil should be about 3.35 Ohms based on it's ratedpower of 43W. What I suspect has happened is that the diode has blowncausing you to read open circuit. This diode is built into the coil resinto protect the car relays and electronics from back EMF. And guess what I cant bu spares from them.....Bba want 300+vat for a refurb unit and it looks like 400ish +vat from other places. What do you think the chances of Seat assisting with this would be? Thanks in advanceM@ Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Take it to a good auto electricians, they should be able to sort out diodes etc for you, for a fraction of the cost of a new or reconditioned unit. Quote
Denis Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Yes, replacing a diode would be simple but the 'resin' bothers me, perhaps the diode and it's connections are encased in epoxy resin? Hope not. Funny though, I do component level repair for a living and a diode going open circuit is very rare. Normally they just go short. Quote
