Simon Burke Posted September 21, 2012 Report Posted September 21, 2012 Hi guysok, I have stripped my car, and rebuilt it.. She's a '98 Alhambra 110tdi - AHUNow, I am having some real problems....(1) Under the bonnet, there the glowplug relay is, there is two blade fuses.. One is a 5 amp, and one is a 20 amp.. The 20 Amp is blowing constantly(2) The engine is a complete pig to start....(3) Glowplug light is flashing..(4) Battery light is staying on(5) White smoke coming out the exhaust Now, my diagnosis, may be wrong, but.....The glow plug relay is blown, hence the flashing gp light and a biatch to start.. The battery light staying on, I'm at a complete loss Can anyone help??Thanks Quote
gregers Posted September 21, 2012 Report Posted September 21, 2012 it might need a new brake switch, this may well stop the glow plug light from flashing. Quote
seatkid Posted September 21, 2012 Report Posted September 21, 2012 Firstly the AHU engine is 90bhp, AFN engine is 110bhp Secondly Is the car pre or post 98 revamp - the car had complete new electricals starting with early 98 builds. Many cars sold in 98 were still the old 97 model. The glowplug relay (K70) is actually housed in the central junction box on both pre and post 98 models, which is under the drivers dash so I dont know what device under the bonnet youre referring to. A photo would help. The Glowplug light doubles up as an engine management warning/fault light (which is when it flashes). It could be flashing for a number of reasons, the common one as Gregers points out is a faulty brake switch (its a dual device). But it could be an ECU or sensor issue. VAGCOM would help pinpoint this. Being a pig to start and white smoke are possibly related and sounds like your injection/engine timing is out. If you changed the timing belt recently, you could have the timing set wrong. Battery light staying on is either a faulty alternator or faulty wiring. Quote
Simon Burke Posted September 22, 2012 Author Report Posted September 22, 2012 ok..Gregors... It might be.. I'll check it out..SeatKid... I was told it's an AHU.... I'm not calling you a liar... I just simply don't know any more....It's a '98 mk1.. I will take a heap of photos and post them up here with descriptions of where they are.... thanksS. Quote
Simon Burke Posted September 22, 2012 Author Report Posted September 22, 2012 Ok, an update...I have put a video on youtube to show ya whats happening when I try to start her...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8CPx9KYXYQ&feature=youtu.beAnd, the fuses under the bonnet, here's a photo of that toohttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8042/8012494941_b0c0a883c5.jpgThis is under the bonnet, on the right hand side... there are two fuses here, a 5 amp, a 20 amp, and a long one, which says on it 50A.. so I am assuming it's a 50 amp... But the 20 amp keeps popping...Any ideas??Thanks Quote
gregers Posted September 22, 2012 Report Posted September 22, 2012 whats the red light doing on the door when you try to start the car?also the smoke is that comming from the exhaust or from the booster heater?if booster heater then i would say it needs a new glowplug.(you need to read up on this)its a small thread.the fuse box under the bonnet,do a search on this plenty of info about the wire/s burning out etc. Quote
Simon Burke Posted September 22, 2012 Author Report Posted September 22, 2012 ok.. the light on the door??? I think thats the central locking....the smoke is coming from the exhaust... It's when the engine is running, but not smoothly..Yeah, the fuses, I kinda rectified it.... another post said that one of the fuses in the fusebox under the dash is too low amperage... so, I put a 20amp into the one under the dash, and a 25 amp on the one under the bonnetbut the lack of clean burning.... I am at a loss... Quote
Simon Burke Posted September 26, 2012 Author Report Posted September 26, 2012 ******UPDATE******I think I know whats causing the rough running.... (Drumroll please...........)Duff EGR Valve....I will remove and clean it out to see if it makes any difference.... Quote
