Hi I'm new here this is my first post. I'm from Ireland and ooking at buying a Galaxy. I'm finding it difficult to find a well specced diesel galaxy in my price range but the 2.3i Galaxys are very good value with generally a very high spec. I can get a second hand engine easy enough and I was wondering has anyone on here done the convesion. I'm handy enough mechanically but from an electrical engineering backround so I think I should be able to do it but I'm finding it hard to get information on whats involved. From what I can see the whole wiring loom will need to be replaced inc ecu, radiators and everything else.

I'm from a VW background and used to the diagnostics and software so any problems in coding the instrument cluster to the ECU shouldn't be that big a problem. I'm more looking for a list of things that need to be changed out and is there and modifications that need to be done or is it just a case of a lot of hard work but essentially just bolting in a new engine and swapping the wiring loom.

What I'm most concerned about is the ease of removing and installing a new loom. Does the dash need to be removed if so ho difficult is this. Also the 2.3i is automatic. While I'm not opposed to an auto box I here they give trouble so I'd like peoples opinions on this. If I get a engine it will probably come in a car complete with the gearbox so I will probably convert it to manual. I would imagine its more difficult to convert a manual diesel to auto that keep the manual box on the diesel and add a clutch and gearstick.

Also can anyone adivse me on engines. I want something with a bit of poke thats nice to drive. Currently I drive a 130bhp Passat with a PD engine I've never driven a older non PD engine so not sure what these are like but I know they won't have the problem with the cams ths PD have. Idealy I'm looking for a 115bhp or higher PD engine.

wouldve thought it would turn out to be a total nightmare.

and cost a fortune to do???

If it's the running costs that bother you, have you considered fitting a LPG conversion to a 2.3 with a manual gearbox?

I know it's not quite what you are asking, but I'm sure it would be far easier than the mammoth task you are contemplating.

From another site (not about a galaxy specifically but think it applies here):

Back in the 1970s I converted three cars from petrol to diesel. In those days there were no engine control modules, sensors, catalysers, etc. etc. ad nauseam. Even then, by the time you'd done it all it was questionable if you saved any money in the long run.

My advice today? FORGET IT! PDQ. Buy a diesel already.

Leedsman.
