stevie_bees Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 I'm having trouble with the 5-speed auto gearbox in my Galaxy. When I start up and begin driving it's fine, but then it drops into 3rd and stays there. Once the engine warms up to temp, as long as I stop then restart the car, everything is ok apart from a minor jump when it goes into 3rd gear. On the odd occasion, it seems to decide that even when up to temp, and no matter how many times you stop and restart it's remains resolutely in 3rd! Any ideas?? I figured that the fact it goes into 3rd gear is some sort of 'safe' mode, and wondered whether it was a sensor that was causing the problem... Cheers Stevie Quote
chromedome Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Try getting the ATF fluid changed first. This really needs to be done by a garage who knows what they are doing as levels have to be checked at certain temperatures. Also check the wiring between the gearbox and it's ECU as this has been know to wear through. Quote
matmcn Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Have you got a fault code reader?? Quote
stevie_bees Posted September 12, 2012 Author Report Posted September 12, 2012 It's now just staying in 3rd the whole time... Is the fault code reader a separate item?? Quote
Sparkyalan Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Yep...the Galaxy has electronic control boxes that store fault codes. With the right kind of scanner/ reader, it will read those codes and give you a starting point for sorting the problem. There are a multitude of scanners out there that are designed for VAG systems ...I recently got a V-Gate 405 which is very handy...about 30 - 40 quid but cable comes with it. You plug it in to a multi port socket at the bottom of the trim below the steering wheel. This will check the fault codes for both the engine and auto box . Quote
