derekod Posted August 25, 2012 Report Posted August 25, 2012 (edited) This topic has more than likely come up before, but how important is it to have the pd spec engine oil in the 1.9tdi? I have replace the oil in mine but it is with the castrol edge 5w30 FST spec, I had tried to rerturn it to my local jobber as I did not notice the VW 505 01 on the can and was told that is what we would sell for it. As he was not to keen to give me a refund as the one I meant to get was not on the shelf. I know that the EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 FST version states the VW 505 01 spec. Will it make that much of a difference leaving it in? are we going overboard trying to find the exact spec for the car? Edited August 25, 2012 by derekod Quote
seatkid Posted August 25, 2012 Report Posted August 25, 2012 Castrol Edge FST 5w30 is a very high spec, longlife VW507.00 oil, which exceeds and supercedes 505.01, so you are alright with that oil. Quote
derekod Posted August 25, 2012 Author Report Posted August 25, 2012 Am I best to go with EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 FST at the next oil change as both oils are the same price! Quote
seatkid Posted August 25, 2012 Report Posted August 25, 2012 (edited) EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 FST is actually a lower spec oil. Unless your engine has a tendency to burn or use oil, the 5W30 would be better, offering slightly better fuel consumption and longer service life (it can go up to 30,000 miles in suitable modern engines on the VAG variable service regime, but dont try going that long on your engine....) Both oils are very good products. Edited August 25, 2012 by seatkid Quote
