Gents (and ladies).

I've just fitted a new recon turbo after the old one packed up but the new one just isn't working quite as it should!

For a start there's now a strange intermittent rattle noise coming from the passenger side of the engine bay however I am unable to trace exactly where it's coming from.

However, my biggest concern is that when under load the turbo seems to stutter.  I don't notice anything strange at lower speeds and light acceleration but only when i give it a little umph. It begins to boost then drops off for a split second, then boosts gain and so on and so on....it's not a sharp aggressive jolt but more a smooth and gradual on and off.

I've been told that it may be the turbo waste gate but have no idea how I would check this.

I have plugged in Vagcom but there are no fault codes being thrown what-so-ever.  I've not checked Vagcom whilst actually driving as I'm not sure how to do it!

Finally, I thought I'd see if the MAF sensor was nice and clean but have found the most stupid torx bolts only have 5 little star points on as opposed to my 6 point tool bits!

Any help and advice will be great fully recieved

Cheers

Best way I've found to use vagcom when driving is to go into measuring blocks, pick some that sound interesting (maybe manifold requested and actual, N75 duty cycle, or whatever you think useful. ). This is live data that's generally updated as fast as your laptop/the car's ecu can communicate it.

Now if you click the log button, you can tell vcds to capture the info into a file that you can look at later. Better than trying to see the screen while driving :) Clicking start starts the logging.

It will probably log for hours ever on a modern laptop, but small logs are easier to look through, especially if you can do whatever causes your problem to show up.

You can look at logs easily in excel or similar.

Apologies for the rather wobbly explanation, but I can't get to my car atm to do screen shots etc.

There's a lot on this already on the forum, or the ross-tech site is very useful too.

Good luck!

IIRC, isn't a recon or new turbo when fitted have to be set-up?? (something to do with the actuator rod)

Best bet will be to phone the supplying company and ask them for advice.

People, thank you for all your replies. The name is a life long nickname because I did and still do look like Zammo (but not now he is a massive pie eater lol).

I'm calling Midland turbo on Monday to see if the turbo was set up ready for my car so hopefully it was as it was a right bitch to get out and I really don't fancy having to do that again!!!

I'll also have a play with the Vagcom on the move and see if it can throw any light onto the situation...

Will keep you posted, and remember: 'Just say No'.........

Re-reading your original post, sounds like ecu might be responding to quicker rise in boost than it expects - or backing off, because it's not happening as quickly as ecu expects... would be a lot easier to fix these things if ecu just told you the reason it decides to do things...

Will be interesting to hear what the suppliers say. As the basic turbo sounds ok, I'd hope that the very worst case would be replacing the actuator and I think you can do this with the turbo on the car. Hopefully it will be much simpler than that.

All of these seem vulnerable to vacuum leaks etc in the control systems, but I'd guess you've been all through this already.

Was replacing the turbo the only thing you did? Only ask as I've read that egr delete can cause some odd behaviour, and wondered if when changing the turbo you might have disturbed the egr control system slightly.

If you log the boost measuring blocks and the MAF and egr duty cycle that might give a pointer..., or if you find anything else where the requested and actual are way off with the engine running.

Last thought - how far have you driven it since the change? If you disconnected the battery, I've heard it takes a while for the ecu to re-adapt to your precise setup. (I notice you've been a member for longer than me so you're probably thinking something rude at this point!).

Good luck - will be very interested to hear the solution..
