HI, i'm after some help if thats ok. I have a galaxy tdi on a 2001. The aircon is not working. I have had it regassed and there are no leaks. i have also had a diagnostic check and it is showing no faults. The air con is manual and the light on the button works but the pump does no kick in. The pump works if you run a live to it so the pump is fine. I have checked and there is no live to the pump. Anyone got any ideas. Thanks Kevin

Provided you have the 115 bhp variant (not the 130bhp variant) these block diagrams may help.

First thing to check, does the (internal front) blower run on all speed settings?

Check all those fuses at the top of Block diagram 1 and the fan speed resistor pack if the blower doesnt work.

When you have the blower speed on no.1 and the a/c turned on, does the radiator fan(s) come on (at low speed)?

Check all the fuses on Block Diagram 2.

After that you need to check the output of the pressure switch.

Hi, thanks for the reply. The fuses are all ok. I replaced the resistor because the blower only worked on 1 setting the now the blower works on all speeds. I havent checked if the radiator fan comes on. What does it mean if it does of doesnt come on. thanks kevin

Just check it, because that eliminates a number of possibilities if it works correctly.

If you've checked all the fuses (on both block diagrams) then now you need to check the pressure switch with ignition on,the blower on and a/c switched on. I think you need to see 12 volts on all 4 terminals. i.e. both switches closed.

HI thanks for your help seat kid and sorry for the delay in replying. I have now fixed my air conditioning. I checked the pressure switch and noticed a wire goes straight to the outside temperture which is situated right beside it. i bridged the outside temp switich and the ac now works. I havent replaced the faulty outside temp switch i have just left it bridged. I did add a fuse to it thou just in case. I assume i cant cause any damage by doing this. Once again thanks for your help.

Can anyone confirm that you need the outside temp switch for the air con to work - and that the switch is the same one used to trigger the aux heater?

On my MKII the temperature sensor/switch used to trigger the auxillary heater is clipped to the Wiper Arm Assembly under just in front of the pollen filter assembly

Here it is still clipped to the bracket that attaches it to the Wiper Arm Assembly

As mine has Climate Control the the outside temperature sensor is probably used to trigger that the outside temperature is warm enough to run the air con. On the MKII the sensor is located on the chassis just below the nearside bumper mounting.

On the Manual Air Con it sounds like it is located near the High/Low pressure switch behind the bumper cover undet the drivers headlight.

Around here (This is on my MKII before the pipework was fixed so it is bent out of position, where the garage that replaced the radiator left it!)

Great reply Silverbeast. I now have a clue where the temp sensor currently dangling below the bumper should go. Just the temp sensor near the air filter to work out now....

I can't see VW/FORD having a completely unneccessary switch in the a/c, so I'd be inclined to replace the temperature switch/sensor when you can and before the really cold weather comes back. This article http://www.audiworld.com/tech/misc2.shtml gives some interesting information. It may be that the system has other protection built in, but...

Mine was dangling inside the bumper after I had had the radiator changed. I only realised when I was taking the front end apart to get my air con fixed...along with many othe things (missing bolts, bent pipes etc) TIS shows it fastened to the bumper cover and it was only with the help of Mirez and Chris on the other forum that I was able to find out where it was supposed to be. That's why I have so many pictures - when I get chance I will try and put together some "How To's".

From the article you linked to, the temperature sensor will be there to prevent the air-con running in cold (<5C?) conditions

Haynes manual says it clips to the bumper too. I looked as best I could, and put it down to not being an original bumper even though that seemed strange. I've got lots of odd bits like you that needed sorting, missing bolts, hoses/pipes not clipped or clips that don't attach to anything. Got the ac recharged last week and it works now, so I'm glad to get this sorted - don't want it to stop because a wire's frayed through and anyway it fidgets me having stuff like that (especially if I didn't do it...)

Here's a better picture of where it mounts, taken just before I took the radiator opening panel off (big fibre glass/plastic panel that the bonnet strike and radaitors are all mounted on) in order to have an air-con pipe repaired. If I recall it's an (M6?) bolt with a 10mm head that screws into a thread in the chassis (not a self tapper). Bear in mind that mines a MKII - not a MKI. I can tell one of yours is a MKI, but the second was I believe around the point the MKII came out. My Haynes for the MKII shows the bracket for the Temp Sensor fitted in correct location (though not with the sensor fitted) in the sections on bumper removal.

Thank you for that. Really clear pic and I'll be under the car as soon as it dries up a bit here. Both mine are MK1's though the 2000 has apparently some MK2 features according to the previous owner, so I'm following both possibilities. I remember my old mk1 Mondeo had mk2 rear brakes...
