a18nkd Posted May 12, 2012 Report Posted May 12, 2012 Hi does any one have an idea on how much it would cost to have my 1998 galaxy's turbo replaced the engine is AHU which i thing it's a garratt turbo but have no idea of how much it would cost to replace as when i was driving back home today it started to smoke a little then got to the point there was clouds of smoke behind me and when i came to a round about and put the clutch down the car revved it's knackers off and i had to put it in 5th gear and release the clutch to stall it i managed to get it home taking it slowly back then i got under the car pulled the intake pipe off the turbo put my finger inside and found oil (not a good sign probably why the car revved it's self) i try'd to move the turbo shaft it seemed ok except it didn't spin as freely as it did befre hand when i checked a few weeks ago as i have had problems with the car going into limp mode (loss of turbo power)any help would be very helpful i live in the washington, tyne and wear area if any know a good garage that doesn't cost the earth please help. rookie123 Posted May 12, 2012 Report Posted May 12, 2012 (edited) Don't know how much it would be on the Galaxy, but my wife just had the turbo go on her Fiat Doblo and to get it rebuilt (with full brand new core assembly and balancing) was £360 at a turbo specialist in Glasgow. Our local garage took £200 in parts and labour to remove & refit the turbo, change oil/filters, clean out sump, check and replace pipework and blank out the EGR valve at the same time.All in we were £560 for the Doblo - I would imagine it might be a bit more on the Galaxy and am only giving you a ballpark figure based upon what the cost was for us.You could try your luck with a secondhand turbo, but it could be hit or miss and you might end up in the same boat again pretty quickly.By the way, she also had the engine "runaway" when the turbo went - scary stuff!
