the a/c on my mk2 2.3 zetec siezed up today, can it be bypassed by fitting a shorter belt or would the compressor (and maybe an idler looking at the routing) need to be removed too?

....or maybe replace the pulley/clutch only on the compressor? It got noisy with the a/c turned off (clutch was disengaged) with a strong burning clutch smell and eventually siezed up, stalling the engine. (yes I know, I should have fixed it sooner!)

Yes the non AC belt will work. My mate sorted mine out that way and its working fine. He only removed the AC unit and fitted the shorter belt. I'll get another AC unit when i can but at least now i can go to work again. YIPPEE. I love my 1999 2.3 auto Ghia Galaxy, what a vehicle ;-) Well, apart from the MPG ;-(
