Fraudulent ford log book

5 members have voted

  1. 1. What would you do if you found out your cars service log book meant nothing even though its stamped Ford?

    • speak to head office and send a copy
    • speak to the garage who's address appears on ford stamp

    • Nothing as there is nothing you can do as its not worth the paper its stamped on

If the garage is adamant that the stamps are forgeries and not theirs, take the matter up with Ford, who should be able to examine both dealer computer records and the authenticity of the stamps. Most stamps have security codes embedded that trace where they came from. And, certainly in VAG, the stamp codes change at least once a year, so if your stamps are all identical it looks like someone has obtained a stamper illegally and made up a false record.

With all the evidence you should then approach the seller and ask them to explain. Unless you are happy with the fairy story they give you, or the money they give back, the next stop is either trading standards or the police.

I thought it was always the case that the service book was not worth the paper its written on, unless its backed up by the invoice for that service,

private sellers and garages have been stamping the service books themselves since they were invented.

if a seller just shows you a service book without paperwork to backup the service alarm bells should ring.

any honest seller would be very eager to show all the paperwork to show the car was cared for..

service books and stamps are very easy to come by

To be fair, you have a service book with stamps in it that appear to be genuine dealer stamps - that doesn't necessarily mean that the dealer actually stamped the book or did the servicing. If the dealer concerned is saying that they have never serviced the vehicle, then it's likely that a third party must have fraudulently stamped the book. There's no way that Ford or the dealer concerned can be responsible for this, your first port of call must be the individual or company that sold you the car.

It might be worth checking the miles too, it's not unknown for falsified service documentation being used to back up a clocked mileage. Check the mileages on the last 5 MOT tests using the VOSA website, and make sure they tally with the current reading.

The other possibility is that one of the dealers technicians serviced it in his own time i.e. on a Sat morning and stamped the book.

A lot of dealers let their technicians do this and is what happens with me. VW dealer, VW technician using VW parts but not VW prices.

I would be surprised if the dealer actually 'allows' this, I wouldn't think the technician would have the authority to use the dealer's stamp when the car hasn't actually been serviced by the franchised dealer?

I personally hardly ever bother with dealers stamps. I find it far more useful simply to keep every invoice for every service, every repair, every last bulb fitted to the car - much more authentic to prospective buyers than the stamped service record.
