hampstead Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Hello We've just bought a 98R TDI Galaxy which we pick up tomorrow, so I'm trying to arrange insurance for it. Most insurers seem to be unable to identify it accurately from the number plate - some think it's a 2.0 petrol for instance. The AA car data check identifies it as a Ghia X TDI 110, which I believe to be correct. I would have thought the VIN plate could tell me exactly what model it is - does anyone know how to interpret the VIN? Many thanks. Quote
Guest Andyjflet Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 I have the Ford TIS disk which I think might be able to tell you, the best bet is to go onto the Ford web site and enter the service and maintenance section. In here you have the option of entering your vehicle registration and it should come up with the model year and colour. Give it a go. Quote
kalel Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Hi folks.. I found a website having a VIN decoder for Fords. http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/vindecoder.html It also gives a rundown on how to manually decode the VIN. Quote
Guest Andyjflet Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Ouch, I checked the codes and the one for my Galaxy comes up correct but I typed one in for my Peugeot Coupe and it comes up as a Fiesta ??????? :( Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 but I typed one in for my Peugeot Coupe and it comes up as a Fiesta ??????? :( I think it only decodes Ford VIN numbers :D Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Andy try this one instead your pug may show up as a pug! or a ringer! :( VIN DECODER Quote
Guest Paul Collins Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Andy try this one instead your pug may show up as a pug! or a ringer! :( VIN DECODER Tried this one out - everything right, except it reckons the assembly plant is in the states :-) Paul Quote
Guest Andyjflet Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Phew its OK, it is a Pug after all and not a Fiesta !! :( Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 ISTR Pug coupe not assembled by Peugeot but by Pininfarina in Italy, who may use their own VIN numbering system. Quote
Guest Andyjflet Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 Its the 206cc Ivor, Its says its made in France. The old 306 cc was styled by Pinafarina cos I remember the badges on the wings/ side panels. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 Thought you meant THE Peugeot Coupe, based on 406 floorpan. Quote
MrT Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 Interesting on the VIN decoding, when my VIN is used in various Ford programs it comes up with the colour, engine, gearbox and "high end" model. I don't know if Ford use some of the build sequence keys to determine this. Quote
hampstead Posted June 14, 2004 Author Report Posted June 14, 2004 Thanks kalel for the link. Looks like the VIN doesn't contain engine info, though - does anyone know how to interpret engine numbers! We found an insurer who doesn't make a distinction between a 90 and a 110, so we are up and running. Quote
Guest EVSS Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 most insurers weve dealt with in the last week reckon ford dont make a ghia x and can only put it down as a ghia.....gary Quote
HJT Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 There hasn't been a Ghia X since the facelift but that didn't stop every company we got quotes from stating our 2002 Ghia was a Ghia X. Doesn't give you much faith in them does it. Howard Quote
