Would i be right in thinking with climate control on, but aircon off the system runs just like a normal blower type system, as in it doesn't eat into the mpg?

yes.as said if the aircon isnt turned on then your heating system works just like a standard setup.

but its probably worth running your aircon once a month for 20 mins or so.
