anddyy Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 (edited) hi, join'd here as im helping my uncle look for a galaxy. he needs to be able tow his caravan so were looking at maybe buying a 2.3, as the 2.0 seem too small for a car the size of the galaxys and the 2.8 is a no no due to fuel, he would have a diesel but most seem out of his budget so that leaves us with the 2.3 which seems ideal. were just wondering how reliable the auto boxes are, how many miles can you get out of them before they break, same question for the engine aswell lol. seen a fair few galaxys with over 100k miles and alot of them autos, which he doesnt mind having so long as there reliable and ok for towing a caravan. cheers andy Edited March 10, 2012 by anddyy Quote
sparky Paul Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 (edited) The 2.3 petrol engine is bomb proof if serviced regularly, but the auto box is not... a quick scan of the Technical section will reveal a large number of threads regarding auto gearbox failures. Rectification of these problems by a specialist can be expensive, and because of the failure rate, good secondhand units are thin on the ground and command good prices. Most reliable choices are the 2.3 petrol or a diesel, with manual gearbox. Welcome to the forum, by the way. Edited March 10, 2012 by sparky Paul Quote
navjam Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 My 2.3 Auto, on a 51 plate at 88k miles which I've had from new and taken care of it, produced this incredibly pungent burning odour 10miles into my journey about 2 weeks ago, the smell eventually went 2 days later but then it started to really struggle to change up a gear. The local transmission guy said its the gearbox, Quote
