nicebutdim Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Hi everyone. Is it possible to remove the air con compressor and install a shorter aux belt to the Galaxies? Mine is a 2000 Mk1 Tdi. The aircon hasn't worked for ages now, and to be honest even if it did I wouldn't use it with today's fuel prices. Many thanks,Tim Quote
SpeedView Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 What are you trying to acheive? The aircon compressor has a clutch on the front of it. When the aircon is off, the clutch is dis-engaged, and it is just like having an extra idler pulley (no drag on the engine). You can make sure that the clutch is ALWAYS dis-engaged by unplugging it. There will be a (quite a fat) wire conencted to the aircon compressor. When this is powered, the clutch will turn on and drive the aircon compressor from the engine. If you disconnect it (tie it out the way and insulate the end, won't you?) then the aircon clutch will never engage/is always an idler. This can be worth doing - saves the engine turning the compressor pointlessly if you accidentally set the A/C on in the cabin. If you want to remove the compressor to save weight (I really woudln't bother myself) then you'll need a shorter belt. You won't *really* notice the difference. Belt numbering. A typical belt might have a part number 6PK2205. This means a 6-rib polyvee belt (6P), with a k pitch/spacing between the vees (K), and 2205 mm long. (2205) Here are the standard lengths: http://www.clshah.com/cimage10/105707multipullbelts.pdf If you needed a 6 rib 1900 mm long, as for a 6PK1900. Easy. Halfords (of all palces!) can search by this common part number. Often if you ask "do you have a belt for a Jaguar XJ8" they will say no, but if you ask "do you have 7PK2385" they'll say yes. Stupid parts system! Also: http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=techni&thread=120834&page=1#1501676 Quote
nicebutdim Posted March 7, 2012 Author Report Posted March 7, 2012 Ok, that's great. I'll just unplug it then. (I honestly didn't know it acted like an extra pulley when off). Many thanks,Tim Quote
