nickcockman Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Hi. Please could someone tell me what the part is and where it comes from - I found it resting in the undertray when I removed it to do an oil change? :) The car is a 2003 galaxy 1.9 tdi 115bhp... The car seems to drive ok, so I am guessing that it isn't a really important part (hopefully)!? Also, is it ok to drive the car without the undertray on? I need to repair it as one of the bolts has pulled through and both of the small ones near the back have ripped off :( ... Many thanks,Nick Quote

Many thanks,Nick aha your air con clutch plate has fallen off after the retaining bolt has come undone- usually the hardened spline shaft wears the splines away on one side (turn it over do the slines show on both sides) you should also have a retaining bolt Edited March 4, 2012 by NikpV Quote
nickcockman Posted March 4, 2012 Author Report Posted March 4, 2012 aha your air con clutch plate has fallen off after the retaining bolt has come undone Thanks for a super speedy response! :) I assume that the air con wont be working at the moment then?! I didn't find any bolt in the undertray - do I need to source one and then just bolt it back on? Any pointers on where it goes and how easy it is to fix? :( Thanks. Quote

The shaft of the compressor is hard and usually as the bolt has come undone slowly the splines on the shaft have worn away the splines inside the clutch plate except o the outside end which has pulled off the shaft first (as on your photo) . Location of compressor - face the engine, look down LHS just under the alternator. Quote
gregers Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 and if you had been using your aircon,it wouldve been making a hell of a racket, mine went the same way and the noise was bloody terrible.as nik has said, but on investigating your spline on your compressor if it is ok and intact, then you could try sourcing a compressor from ebay cheaply and rob the clutch off of it,this is what i ended up doing,i posted my findings of repairing it on here so do a search on it,as for driving without your under tray,BEST NOT.as the power steering is located at the bottom somewhere when you hit a puddle it can affect the steering, common problem.again do a search on this for info. I have looked on ebay and it looks like I can get the pully clutch for around 100 quid: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-Volkswagen-Beetle-Golf-Audi-TT-Air-Con-Pump-Pulley-Clutch-2D0809905B-/160731128903?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item256c526447 Looks like the same clutch plate from the picture on the ebay item, but obviously I would need to investigate proper part numbers: Thanks for all the info, I'll take a look at the compressor this week and see what state the shaft splines are in.Cheers,Nick Quote

I'll take a look at the spline shaft and see what it is like. I'll get the undertray back on ASAP then - I could do without any more problems on the car as it seems to be gradually falling apart! :( The other current problem I am looking at is the left hand indicator sticking on and the relay is soldered into the fuse box - Great! :) Quote
nickcockman Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 Looks like the spline shaft on the compressor is also worn, so I guess that leaves me with needing a new compressor!? :( The compressor is a Sanden (SD7V16) 7M3 820 803 A (YM2H 19D629 BB) which I guess is a popular one used in most other VW's from this era. I might try and source a second hand one off ebay and then try and get an air con person to fit and regas, as I imagine a new or recon one is going to be several hundreds of pounds :) ... Thanks for the info and pointers. Time to try and get it fixed now... :)Cheers,Nick Quote
nickcockman Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 Just found one on ebay off a 2005 tdi with same part number. They are offering 3 month warranty on it and said that it has been tested on the car before removing... Quote
