Hi

Be careful of changing a part on the compressor, as it may not cure your problem. If the compressor has seized, I would suggest you get a new compressor fitted, but ensure the a/c system is flushed first - any debris that has caused the old compressor to fail, will then be flushed out of the a/c system before you fit a new compressor.

This may be a costlyl option for you, so it depends on how much you want a/c on your vehicle.

I dont know about the shorter belt option I'm afraid.

Hope this helps.

Too late for OP but my '97 aspen TDI came out of the factory like this. Ford no longer carry all parts for a mk1 I'm told - my garage couldn't get the shoulder bolt that fell out after they changed the timing belt - one reason why I now have two galaxys - but your scrappy may be handy. Haynes manual shows the "non a/c" belt path etc IIRC.
