Penz Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 Hi all, Hope someone can help. Last night my OH open my bonnet and filled up my water. He then couldn't shut the bonnet, it would latch but not completely shut. I looked of here and told him to try the wd40 and stuff. He ended up getting frustrated with the bonnet and attacked the lock with a screw driver and said the spring broke. As i have 3 children one a newborn he cable tied the bonnet down. I went to the local ford dealship this morning and he basically said sounds like the catch (with out looking, said he didn't want to look cos if he cut the cable tie off won't be able to put another one on) he ordered me a new catch and I have to take backk tomorrow for fitting. I have no idea how much this will cost me as he didn't say. Does this sound right? What if it is only the cable will I still have to pay for the catch? I'm really worried so any help would be appreicated. Quote
gregers Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 let them sort it out, wouldnt let oh near it until he is a bit calmer other wise it might cost you a lot more then its going to cost you. spraying the handle with some wd40 might of worked, greasing the catch might of been better, attacking it with a screwdriver OH DEAR ,but it sounds like the cable/catch was coroded inside, taking it out and soaking it in oil sometimes frees it up. Keith D Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 I had a similar problem recently. I had a flat battery, tried to open the bonnet to charge it but the bonnet release cable snapped off near the bonnet release catch so was unable to open the bonnet. Luckily, I have Home Start Cover with Green Flag so called them out. They opened the bonnet by unbolting everything from underneath and then jump started the engine. I then went to the Ford dealer to get a price for replacing the cable. The new cable assembly was about Quote
Tomoose Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 I have replaced the bonnet cable myself. Its all just nuts and bolts, a fairly simple job. Took me about 2hrs from start to finish, taking my time with plenty of tea. The only tricky bit is finding the hole in the bulkhead - you have to cut the insulation in the passenger footwell and its a bit of a faff as there are lots of wiring looms etc that could easily be damaged. Got there in the end though. Quote
