Agree with gregers, however, i think you may be shown the middle finger by the seller. EPC stands for 'Electronic Power Control' and when it comes on means that the computer has detected a fault and may or may not put the car in limp mode to save any damage. The triangle with a circle around it stands for 'Electronic Stability Program' or ESP/traction control. There should be a button on the console with ESP on it, has that been pressed? If not, again, there is a problem and unfortunately has to be checked professionally. Quote

spj630 Posted March 11, 2012 Author Report Posted March 11, 2012 Hi allReplaced fuel filter as advised to by mechanic then I noticed an air hose that had become unattached so fixed that too, hoping this was the problem. On motorway again today and as soon as we hit 70mph lights come straight back on? It's driving me nuts now!!!Mechanic suggested changing fuel pump but can't find anything on net that suggest this so has anyone any ideas please as I running out of patience and money!!! Quote
MrT Posted March 12, 2012 Report Posted March 12, 2012 Somewhere on this forum about 7 or 8 years ago, I posted some stuff about a similar issue. Mine was caused by an aftermarket MAF which gave readings which the engine management system reported as "implausible reading" and also something along the lines of "over-torque reading". This made the engine go into limp mode and also put the gearbox into limp mode which I think locked it into third gear. I think this also put unusual warning lights on as well. Replacing the original MAF (still working after 11 years) and resetting the fault codes fixed this. When my faulty manufactured coil packs went that also brought the enginer management light on the fault reported was "misfire on cylinder X". Thirdly a nearly dead battery can give all sorts of odd warning lights as well. I suggest you either borrow an engine code reader or ask a garage to read your fault codes. Remember this requires a VAG (ODB2) not Ford codes to be read on this model as the engine and managment systme are Volkswagen. Quote
v6mikey Posted March 12, 2012 Report Posted March 12, 2012 I bought a cheap VAGCOM cable from ebay, downloaded the VCDS software then plugged into the car to read the fault codes. You really are just taking a stab in the dark without the fault codes that the engine or abs is throwing up. Quote
spj630 Posted March 12, 2012 Author Report Posted March 12, 2012 Just returned from garage car going in Wednesday for diagnostics Before I reached garage EPC light had gone off but traction control light still on mechanic took it for a spin and gears were still snatching badly mechanic thought/ thinks it might need new gearbox... Ouch!He then rang bloke who does there gearbox work and he said it may be ABS sensor so will know more Wednesday ... Fingers crossed its the latter! Quote
spj630 Posted March 17, 2012 Author Report Posted March 17, 2012 well still no joy, garage had car on wednesday and had MAF code come up and torque signal out of range code, told me to change MAF sensor again, which shop just exchanged, did this and took it on motorway and bam... same again!put VAGCOM on and same codes as garage so car now going back in on tuesday as they are thinking loose connection/bad wiring????Any help please????? seatkid Posted March 17, 2012 Report Posted March 17, 2012 You say you got your MAF sensor from a shop? There are several MAF sensors fitted to Shalaxys dependendant on model year, engine code and ECU variants. In particular the Auto box variants do have a torque limiting program to protect the gearbox so I suspect the MAF is different to the manual version. Even though they look similar, they are not interchangeable. Also many Ebay and possibly some motor factor may stock pattern parts that are poor chinese versions of the real mc coy. Personally I would only be happy with a MAF sensor from a (ford/vw/seat) dealer or maybe GSF car parts if it was a genuine OEM part (e.g. Bosch). Quote
Strathclyde Posted April 23, 2012 Report Posted April 23, 2012 We've had similar problems. A few months back, after a motorway drive, EPC and traction control lights then came on. On stopping and then starting, the auto gear change was awful, with a huge thump as it changed up through each gear. Called the RAC, who after an hour (he couldn't get into the error log, tho said he should have been able to...which perplexed him), he tried a last-gasp hunch- disconnect the battery, wait 10 mins to let all electrics discharge, then reconnect (in effect a total reboot). Car was then fine...and indeed remained so for several months. Then last weekend, it happened again - this time the vehicle stuck in 1st gear, but was driveable (at 8mpg!!!). When home, I did the reboot-thing, and once again, all was cleared. It almost sounds like a software error...or some sensor that is occasionally throwing up an error that then disables the electronics controlling the gearbox. This time, I'm taking the car into the garage in the hope they can make sense of the error logs... Will report further, but someone may get a clue from our symptoms??? Quote
HurleyBloke Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 Just returned from garage car going in Wednesday for diagnosticsBefore I reached garage EPC light had gone off but traction control light still on mechanic took it for a spin and gears were still snatching badly mechanic thought/ thinks it might need new gearbox... Ouch!He then rang bloke who does there gearbox work and he said it may be ABS sensor so will know more Wednesday ... Fingers crossed its the latter! We've started experiencing this exact same fault. Found that by pulling off and turning everything off for a few minutes the faults/lights clear and everything is fine. It happens on every motorway journey. Did you get to the bottom/root cause of the problem? Quote
HurleyBloke Posted April 7, 2013 Report Posted April 7, 2013 I've found that if I keep the revs under 3000 and generally keep to 70 mph that I can drive it without any of the lights coming on. If they do, turning the car off for a while seems to reset the lights and taking the gearbox out of limp mode, giving you another chance! I would still like to know the root cause though. Quote
MRVR6 Posted March 3, 2017 Report Posted March 3, 2017 my esp and engine light came on after unplugging and plugging maf sensor and still can not get rid of the light, any other things I can try? Quote
