jvernon Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 My 1999 2.8 V6 Ghia X with dual air con has just started having smoke coming out of the bonnet. I quickly went home, lifted the bonnet and saw that the smoke or steam or whatever was coming from around or under the air box! Any suggestons please! P.S I really need your help! Quote
charles Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 steam: overheated engine (light above temp gauge must go on) orleaking water from cooling system on hot surface f.e. exhaust Quote
jvernon Posted June 3, 2004 Author Report Posted June 3, 2004 thanks for the reply. there are no lights lit up on the temperature gauge and temperature looks fairly normal, no where near red anyway. Does that mean i have a coolant leak. I can't make my mind up whether it is smoke or steam. If it is steam it is smelly steam! Thanks again Quote
charles Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 check if there is water dripping under the car (the engine undertray could also collect the water) Also you must see that the water level in the expension tank has lowered. If that is so problably a water hose is leaking. Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 You are sure its steam/coolant? only thing down that side of the engine that is possibly the source of a leak is the water pump! as every one else has suggested check the coolant level and go on from there if, it is coolant you will notice it more when the engine is hot as the coolant system is pressurised and any major leaks come out with a bit of pressure behind them! so be careful! B) he who speaks from experience from when his MK2 Golf heater matrix by pass valve failed while I was looking under the bonnet! :D Quote
jvernon Posted June 4, 2004 Author Report Posted June 4, 2004 I have had a thought! :D I have very low pads on my brakes and was going to change them this weekend. If it is rubbing metal on metal will it get very hot and make smoke?Just a thought. Quote
charles Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 I don't think so, your brake warning light will come on before it reaches the metal.and metal to metal sounds terrible. was it white smoke (steam) or black (burning)? how does it smell, coolant has a typical methanol smell, burning PVC smells total differently. jvernon Posted June 4, 2004 Author Report Posted June 4, 2004 It was white i think. Not sure though. It has stopped doing it a bit now. It's not as bad, you can only see it when you open the bonnet, before it was puffing out of the sides of the bonnet and out of the front grill. I have no undershield on because i have just changed the CPS and i am planning to do an oil change. It didn't smell like electrical burning, but i couldn't tell what it did smell like. I can hear a noise which is like something hissing, it sounds like somehing dripping onto something hot and i can see liquid marks all over this bracket in the engine bay from underneath, i can also see something dripping underneath the car. when it has stopped dripping i will have a look and keep you informed. Thanks again. Guest Andyjflet Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 If you have no undertray you could be getting the steam if youve driven through water etc. Just a warning, dont drive without the undertray on, serious accidents do occur like this, turn the corner, spray onto the Power steering pulley, slip...no steering oops. Seriously its happened to a few poeple on here. Quote

jvernon Posted June 11, 2004 Author Report Posted June 11, 2004 Figured it out. One of the pipes that i think go into the injector manifold, or near the throttle switch, had a split in it and was leaking onto the exhaust. Quote
