2004AUY85kwTDI Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Hi, when I drive over speed dumps there is a noise from front. It is not a nocking noise, sound more like rubber towards metal making a "screaming" noise. The noise disapears when the problem area gets wet. When driving in rain there is no noise. When driving on dry roads the noise seems to gradualy dissapear when driving for a while (problem area getting warm..?) To me it sounds like it is the rubber in the front top mounts. I changed shock absorbers but did not change the rubber top mounts, they looked OK and to me they seemed not to be a part that needs to be changed. This noise started gradually before I changed absorbers and has continued, there was not any change in noise with new absorbers. Maybe the rubber quality changes (hardned) over the years? For trouble shooting I lifted the right front end of the car from the ground, then there is a 10mm(?) clearence between the rubber and the body of the car. I had som old belt grip spray that I sprayed between rubber and body. After this the noise is still the same and still the same on right and left side.Is the noise from where the springs rest? Top bearings are OK.I am not sure that the noise is from the top area, as you know it is hard to finger point where noise comes from. Maybe from anti roll bar clamps?Trouble shooting on a problem like this is not easy (to me anyway  )Anyone had this problem? Quote
marinabrid Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 have you changed the drop links lately ? they cause all kinds of odd noises that you wouldnt normally associate with them. for what they cost its woth doing. Quote
2004AUY85kwTDI Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 Yes I have checked them and they are ok, but thanks for the advice  Quote
nicebutdim Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 More than likely arb bushes. I've just changed EVERYTHING on my front suspension except these (I couldn't afford them at the time) and I'm still getting the same noise that you're describing above. Mine seems to do it more in colder weather. Quote
2004AUY85kwTDI Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 Same her, more noise in cold (and dry) wether  Everything works on my car, I like my car, but this noise is frustrating. What is a arb bushes ? Quote
seatkid Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 (edited) What is a arb bushes ?The anti roll bar (arb) is a long steel torsion bar that goes from one side of the vehicle to the other. It is connected to the suspension at both sides via the arb droplinks. The front arb is fitted across the car along the bottom of the engine bulkhead and is held in place by two U mounts. The mounts on the arb have rubber bushes that allow the arb to rotate without banging about. These bushes perish with time. There is also an arb on the rear suspension again with two bushes/mounts but no drop links as they connect directly to the trailing arms. The arb's restrict the left/right relative suspension movement when going round corners, stopping the car leaning or rolling excessively. The bushes are easy to see, just remove the wheel and follow the arb around from the bottom of the droplink to where it goes into the engine bay. An inspection / squirt of wd40 on them should prove if they are to blame. The attached photo shows the droplink, the arb is connected to the bottom of the droplink.  Arb droplinks can also make all sorts of sounds (but predominently banging/knocking), it is difficult to check a droplink in situ as they can be under load if the car is not level and even the smallest wear in the ball joints gives rise to noise out of all proportion. 2004AUY85kwTDI Posted January 11, 2012 Author Report Posted January 11, 2012 Thanks seatkid  , I will spray som wd40 on the anti roll bar U-monts to see what happens. Have to wait for dry wether again, when the sound is there I have my ub40 spray ready ! Quote
2004AUY85kwTDI Posted January 24, 2012 Author Report Posted January 24, 2012 Yesterday I sprayed ub40 spray on my arb clamps but still the same noise. More trouble shooting to be done... Quote
GrannyPower Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Hi. After reading this post the other day I decided to replace the anti-rollbar bushes as my galaxy was making a kind of sqelching noise over bumps. They took about 45 minutes to do the pair and it has cured the noise. Very easy fix. Wish I had done them before. Quote

2004AUY85kwTDI Posted January 24, 2012 Author Report Posted January 24, 2012 Hi, I will order new arb bushes tomorrow as you did grannypower. I would think the ub40 spray would make some change of sound, but to be sure I will replace them with new. Quote
GrannyPower Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 When you take the old ones out and compare with the new there is a big size difference. Handy hint is to use mole grips to clamp the new bush shut on the edge of the clamp bracket, you can then put the bolt back in and put the nut on by hand. Quote
2004AUY85kwTDI Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 Hi again, changed both front arb bushes. Noise is not there anymore, fantastic !I was like 100% sure that the noise came from upper area, but it didnt! It feels like I got myselfe a new car again, thanks to forum members for helping me  Quote
