If you were using it to clear mist on the inside of the screen you would be waiting for a while.

They are really only for clearing ice/snow on the outside of the screen.

Did you notice a slight drop in the engine revs when switched on?? If so it is probably working.

What age is your car??

On Mk1's you can't run H.F.S, H.R.S and rear heater at the same time.

FWIW, I find the hfs effective to demist the inside of the screen, whether or not that is it's main purpose.

I asked this question a while back and found out that autowindscreens had not earthed the replacement.

I have a Mk2 and this is based on that, but the Mk1 will not be that different.

The screen has two sets of elements so it is unlikely itself to have totally failed. The +12V power to the screen is by two heavy leads which are connected to fly leads from the elements. These two leads are connected under the side panels adjacent to the quarterlights at either side of the dashboard. Remove the panel and put your hand in the hole and feel for a thick lead and check it has power.

The earth lead comes off the centre of the screen at the top in the form of a plastic strip with copper wires inside it and this is earthed to the body behind the light unit in the centre of the roof by the windscreen (behind the roof clock in the Mk1).

On the Mk2, the screen will only work if the engine is running (actually running not just the ignition turned on).

The fuse for the front screen is a level 3 fuse which are not normal fuses and may require a visit to the garage.

You don't see the elements when it de-mists - they are much finer wire and much closer together than the rear screen heater wires. If you look closely in daylight, you should be able to see them.

Yes you can see them in daylight, even better at night with a car comming the other way!

I noticed the other night how much the car was misting up. It was cold and wet and I turned the CC up to 23. Every time we got in and started to go all windows steamed up. Just a funny night have had no problem since.

The element doesn't leave a pattern on my screen when it's demisting. It's clearly visible in daylight; I find that in fog I start to focus on the element (it appears clearly against the white background), which isn't great.
